Re: Pacific States ☂ WV96 - Sir Sly - High
Sir Sly are an American rock three piece group based in Los Angeles, California. The band comprises of front man Landon Jacobs and instrumentalists Jason Suwito and Hayden Coplen. Their debut album
You Haunt Me was released back in 2014. They gained some attention when their song
Gold was used on a trailer for Assassin's Creed Black Flag, strangely enough a video game series that I played for years. It wasn't though until their sophomore album that Sir Sly came to my own attention.
Don't You Worry, Honey released in 2017, with it spawning the popular Billboard Alternative charting hits
&Run and my entry you helped pick for WorldVision 96,
High.
Don't You Worry, Honey is an uplifting listen, and an album I strongly recommend to you if you enjoy
High. It's full of super catchy synth-pop treats topped with a dollop of some trippy psych. Songs like
Fun are super infectious eargasms, but still pack a lot of emotional weight, something which I think helps to set Sir Sly apart a bit from their contemporaries.
Oh Mama is a certified cry jam even. There are four or five songs from the record I would have been easily up for sharing with you people at WorldVision, but
High feels like the right debut for Sir Sly. Also, isn't that music video like the flyest thing ever? Landon Jacobs has got the moves.
Sir Sly's result in this NF was a very pleasant surprise for me, with both
High and
Astronaut doing very well. Chromatics runner up
Shadow put up a decent fight, but it wasn't enough to topple the fun psych rock of Sir Sly. I figured any song in the mini selection could potentially win, but one thing that did shock me was
Blue Girl being a flop. I honestly thought that Chromatics song would have been a front runner here with it's gorgeous music video and contemporary vibes. Only Gera had strong love for it, with Robert also placing it as his favourite (although with 6 points, so i'm unsure how much it really tickled his fancy). Needless to say though,
High was the most loved song from the NF.
Big thank you again to everyone who helped me pick this out. I had originally planned to send Sir Sly with this very song 15 editions ago, but then sadly Chris Cornell passed away, so I did a Soundgarden tribute instead before moving back to Mid-Atlantic States where I stayed for 9 years. Sir Sly were my number one reason for this particular Pacific States return, so i'm kind of thrilled you pushed for them in this NF and helped me in choosing what's hopefully *fingers crossed* the right song. Chromatics will get their chance another time.
Hope you have fun with
High I fell in love with this feel-good song from the first listen, and their latest album turned me into a big Sir Sly fan. I love psych rock and it's been a while since i've heard it done with strong pop sensibilities this well. I'm looking forward to their next record which apparently is supposed to be heading in more of a hip direction. Below is one more video for you. A slick live version of
High. I invite you all to get
high with Sir Sly. Don't be Sir
Shy.
