Söngvakeppnin 75: #GirlsFirst edition - The coldest National Final ever
Welcome to another Söngvakeppnin National Final. We are looking for Icelands WV 75 artist and as you know we decided in beforehand that it should be a female vocalist or band with female vocalists. This sounds totally hot but actually it isn't. The Icelandic singers can't perform half-naked while shaking their asses cause they would freeze immediately. Sad story
When it comes to chosing the artists I decided to go the easy path. That means I simply choose those singers/bands I've used to listen before instead of trying to get to know some other artists I'd never been into. I didnt call this NF the "coldest NF ever" for no reason. I realized most songs here have a very very cold feeling and you can literally feel it on your skin while you listen to it. At the same time, they are quite fascinating and inspiring.
You will notice that I left my cozy comfort zone of Pot F friendly songs in some cases and took some risks. Icelandic artists, especially the female ones, love to go electronic and experimental.. playing with different types of sound effects and whatsoever.
What kind of genres do I offer you? Synth-Pop, a Ballad, Experimental pop, something I cant define that becomes rocky at the end, some spooky ballad, more rock. Two of the songs I already sent in National Finals before #omg #whyareyousouncreative #wehateyouwhiteshoes but seriously, this is a long time ago(WV 46 and WV 51) and many of you didn't even take part yet or forgot them already
and according to my experience giving songs a second chance can pay off.
Two artists, Sóley and Emiliana Torrini have quite many interesting songs. Especially Emiliana is veeery eclectic and she can nearly everything from ballad to folk to synth-pop to up-tempo.. so I think some of these girls are gonna return in a later edition. Not very soon, though.
The Songs
1. Vök - Before
Here my tiny sympathy for some kind of electronic songs is showing up (maybe some people caught me listening to Grimes, Caribou or The Naked and Famous before). This must be the first time I go electronic in WorldVision but it doesn't feel wrong. This is a catchy and captivating little synth-pop candy. I hope you enjoy
2. Myrra Ros - One Amongst Others
Myrra Ros is a rather unknown talented singer who really knows how to make calming and soft pop songs/ballads with beautiful and subtle instrumentation. Her voice is lovely too. Btw, she doesn't have anything to do with Sigur Rós.
3. múm - Underwater Snow
múm is a band who is active for a long time already and built up some reputation over the years. They make experimental pop, using all possible electronic beats and effects and everything what makes sounds... they are famous for their high-pitched vocals.
This is one of their newer songs
4. Mammút - Ströndin
Mammút is in my opinion one of the best Icelandic bands for alternative rock music. I've known this song for quite a while already and it was in my NF for WV 51 but lost to Tilbury. Love this cold and rough atmosphere throughout the whole song. That's Iceland.
5. Sóley - Kill The Clown
This song was in my first NF ever and became 6th. Out of 6.
But that was a strong NF with artists such as Agent Fresco, Ásgeir, Low Roar and Mono Town. I love how spooky and mysterious this song is, moreover the piano kills me.
6. Emiliana Torrini - Gun
Emiliana is known for her hyper up-tempo song Jungle Drum and her Gollum theme in Lord of The Rings. This is one of her rare excursions to the world of old school rock. The guitar chord throughout the whole song is just mindblowing. Would love to see a song like this in WV.
