Re: FINLAND 2013 - Krista Siegfrieds - Marry Me

Apparently Finnish feminists are not happy with Krista Siegfrids’ ESC song Marry Me.

ARTICLE

They are as equally ridiculous as the Swedish ones...

Seriously... get a job and stop hating on everything... just because NONE wants to marry you.. don't need to be bitter on others...

Gosh I hate these western "feminists" who doesn't stand for anything and just hate on everything...

I'm glad you're not a woman, they have a perfectly valid point.

The song is somewhat catchy but they lyrics are quite sexist and I don't like them either.

The song is supposed to be a joke though.

That's not what the singer said. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe she means the words she's singing and only sings the words that were written for her but that is the whole reason why there is a feminist movement. It's usually Men writing songs for women singing about them being submissive towards the male gender. This is just an example though, I don't know who wrote this song in particular. For women the excuse "But it's a joke" "It's just a movie" "It's just a picture" doesn't cut it when media & society trying to enforce gender roles. This is a whole other discussion though for a different forum but as a feminist myself I totally get their concern.

But it's obvious the lyrics are ironical... It's a matter of tone... It's obvious she doesn't tell it as if it was in a ballad. And the injunction "Marry me" told to the boy is paradoxical and renders the irony in all the lyrics...
Does she really looks submitted ?...

I really don’t understand this… xthink Krista doesn’t seem too submissive, but rather dominant compared to the man she wants to have.
I’d also like to think that both sexes need full freedom in the way they express themselves, which means that women have the right to sing submissive lyrics if they choose to. This is not only in the name of gender equality but also in the name of individual freedom. In the end we are individuals, not genders.
At no point have I seen Krista with some anti-feminist agenda. You can only do that if you read the lyrics as a text and nothing else. You also need to consider the lyrics in context with the expression and presentation, and in that combo I have a hard time seeing what the fuzz is about.

For Pete's sake.
I guess Britney's "I'm a slave for you" is also about a woman being submissive to a man. I mean, come on. 99% of love songs are about one partner being ready to do whatever it takes just the please the other one. And this song in particular is about a girl willing to go to great lengths to please a guy she loves. You know, even to change her last name. Shed some pounds. OK, perhaps that could be perceived as a reinforcement of some stereotypes and it would most certainly be one, but there's one little thing: it IS a joke entry. Y SO SERIOUS?

Actually that's exactly what Krista said. She even said some people don't have a sense of humour, and can't get a joke.

Please show me that quote cause that's not what I read. Either way, I'm not worried about the lyrics myself, either. I merely took a problem with A lister insulting feminists for trying to make a point. I also don't think that the homophobia in the American Hip Hop scene is good, either. They're just saying they're playing with those insulting words and don't mean them. Does that make it right?

The song is written by Krista, some other chick, and two dudes. I believe Krista is the one that came up with the idea for the song, and then co-wrote it together with these other three. So, at least in this case it's not a song written by men and then given to a young girl to sing.

They just should have gone with "you're my slave and I'm your master" and everyone would have realized it's not to be taken seriously.

I dislike whining hypocrites who have too much time on their hands... if that's hate, yep then I guess that makes me a hater...

People obviously don't have a sense of humor (apparently not in here either).

I don't really see the problem with the lyrics but people who like to nitpick for the sake of nitpicking will obviously find some kind of hidden meaning and spin it.

Here's a link to the interview where she says it, it's in Finnish though: Krista Siegfrids kertoo onko euroviisuvoitto jo poikinut luvatun kosinnan - Videot - Helsingin Sanomat

Yeah, that's really what Krista says: The song was made with some humor. she has actually told that she made it to hint her boyfriend, that she is waiting for the proposal.

Personally I think that even if the lyrics can be understood in many ways, people really shouldn't take them so seriously. For example the most debated line line "I'm your slave and you're my master" might as well mean something rather sexual... But that's not necessarily the case. I actually have always thought that the song is about a girl who really wants to get married already and she's trying to say that she's ready to do anything to get her man, even though she wasn't ready to do so earlier. and when the man still doesn't get it, she goes a bit silly. I also find the lyrics very ironical saying "look how crazy I've become for you"

But yeah, ANY lyrics shouldn't be taken so literally, because they are usually full of metaphors and word play.

I'm surprised anyone even needs krista's assurance on this subject. I mean, the whole thing's so obviously an innocent joke. Watching the videoclip one almost pities the man for having such a dominative girlfriend, lol.
Feminists are running short of reasons, they will grab at anything.
