My top 5 British anthems:
1 "
Flower of Scotland" (Scotland)
2 "
Jerusalem" (England)
3 "
Londonderry Air" (Northern Ireland)
4 "
Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau" (Wales)
5 "
Trelawny" (Cornwall)
My favourite patriotic British songs, with my favourite versions:
I Vow To Thee, My Country and
Rule, Britannia!
If (UGH!) in 1660 we had gone on the horror story of keeping the Cromwell's and the republic instead of restoring the Monarchy, I would say Rule, Britannia! for the national anthem. I also like "
Nimrod", "
Zadok the Priest" and "
The Sailor's Hornpipe", these have all become patriotic British music, but weren't necessarily composed for that purpose. And I like the American presidential anthem "
Hail to the Chief".
I'm not well up on historic anthems, however I do like
East Germany and the
Soviet Union.
