2008 being a bad year is more symbolic for the 2000s decade that was just tragic and the reason why people have a negative view of Eurovision. Sure, we got bops from Ani Lorak, Charlotte Perelli, Jelena, Sirusho and Queen Kalomira. But the other songs? There is a reason why we have juries and while yeah, they push generic songs and ballads a bit too much overall their impact was positive. The EBU needs to change something about the juries and the voting in general, modernize it, learn from Sanremo, idk.

The worst thing is that it's only going to get worse once countries who haven't gone full 2000s yet notice that it's actually working again and try it themselves next year. :censored:

Which countries have already gone "fully 2000´s" this year?

I´d only put :hr: in that category and some users on this forum wouldn´t even call it a "joke entry" since it´s some iconic and clever way to level criticism at fascists and warmongers. We also got some unconvential songs in strange dresses in the 2010´s and 2020´s.

 ? - But isn´t that somehow current pop with some Nordic influence (something  and :dk: or :is: have also presented now and then?)

I honestly can´t understand why some fans paint such a pessimistic picture.
Trashy fun entries have already been failing at Eurovision since 2008... also in the televoting (unless you put "Igranka" and that Romanian Vampire from the Opera into the same category)

I won‘t explain my views further than I already did since it’s pointless. Everyone has a different taste.

What myself is concerned: I'm not pessimistic. I already have three 12 points songs which is more than I had last year at the end of the NFs. I just think the overall quality at this point is low but not because there are too many "joke entries" or 2000s songs. I just don’t like many of the songs so far. My remark about juries - joke entries has nothing to do with it.

That´s clearly something I can agree on.
The quality is not "great" so far - but.. if you ask me.. that´s a thing we always experience at the beginning of the season - I also have a few :12: and :10: already (but also songs which will probably end up being in my final bottom 5 this year).

I just don´t agree with "no juries in ESC semi finals being responsible for the quality we got so far".

Usually, the "more competitive NF´s are held in the later stages of the season" (e.g. Melodifestivalen, UMK and I´d even add Portugal to that list).
Also, internally selected songs are "finished products" whilst songs which have got selected so far usually undergo (several) stages of revamps (Italy, Malta, Albania, Ukraine have already said that they will revamp their entries and I can see Romania doing the same since they have been revamping their entries in 2020 and 2022 as well).

Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor for the Eurovision Song Contest commented: "(..) This year’s contest is set to be the biggest, most extravagant and spectacular contest to date, a real treat for the senses! (..)"
"A real threat for the senses".. I don't think he listened to Croatia and Denmark yet.

I'm super excited. Last year we had the broken sun and other things but this year I expect the BBC to slay and be a fantastic hosting country.

I LOVE Baileys! A friend of mine just gave me Baileys with the taste of Salted Caramel, plus Baileys pudding powder in three tastes: classic, apple pie and salted caramel. So as you see - I AM SO READY FOR ESC 2023! In case Ikke is going to Liverpool, I will drink enough Baileys to forget the shame. Long live Baileys!

Thank you...I've written one every year since 1991, which has given us lot's of songs for our act...all true stories.
Happy days x
ps. The best country in the World would be one where only Eurovision fans were allowed to live.

I wonder if BBC and Suspilne can make the entries that weren't that strong/favored into some things spectacular. The hosting, design, and stage, all look promising so far.
