My thoughts!
We start the MV with two players on opposite sides of a gameboard. One of them is Theo, the other is a masked figure dressed in black. There are four symbols on the gameboard: the Sun, the labyrinth with three doors, the mountains and an archway with Wine Bottles.
The Sun could symbolize the god of Sun, Apollo, the wine bottles could represent the wine god Dionysus. The mountains could be the Olympos and the three doors three different worlds and getting lost in between them.
There are two pieces representing two players on the board: a Red Pyramid (placed on the Wine symbol) and a Black Cube (placed on the Labyrinth with doors).
I've got golden locks and I'm so captivating, I am famous for my beauty, who am I?
This could mean a few deities, one of them being Apollo, who was known to be beautiful.
I've been told I'm a little overconfident and this could be my downfall, who am I?
The black box is moved on the board and Theo is in a hallway with doors.
I fell in deep, I lost my heartbeat, stuck in between Heaven and Hell in me
Dionysus is also considered a god of rebirth, for he was killed as a baby, but brought back to life. He is also considered a god of insanity and madness and ecstasy, the duality of wine, divine communicant between the living and the dead.
The gameboard is being moved and Theo is unable to find a way out of the hallway.
I fell in deep, I lost my heartbeat, follow the bloodstream
The bloodstream might mean bloodlines or perhaps flowing wine, he is dead, but needs to find a way back to life.
As he ‘follows the bloodstream’, a door opens into a different landscape, a world of mountains and figures in black. Gods of course can travel between different realms.
Hush, hush, hush, if you know my name then please don't repeat it,
Hush, hush, hush, if you know my name then keep it a secret
Whose name should you not repeat? Is it Hades, the god that is in charge of the realm of the dead? Is that why we should hush?
In the ground, in the sky, in the afterlife
In the dark, in the light, in the sweet delight
Hush
In the ground – Dionysos is associated with vegetation and fertility; in the sky – the Sun in the sky as Apollo; in the afterlife – Hades with the dead. Three realms and three doors, three gods? (In the video figures in black join Theo and create a triangle form) In the dark (Hades), in the light (Apollo), in the sweet delight (Dionysus).
We go back to the room of the game.
My desire and my love got me in trouble, I'm decay and I'm revival, now who am I? Could mean Dionysus or Hades, but neither of them had a very troublesome love.
Wrapped in jealousy and cheated by my enemy, from tears to blood to flowers, now who am I? Apollo was a jealous god, with a few of his lovers being turned into flowers.
In the video the two players start fighting/dancing, which ends with Theo’s character getting the black cube into his hand. Now, Apollo and Dionysus are considered quite opposite as gods, the two sides of life (both associated with music, btw). But Apollo had an oracular temple that he left for Dionysus for three months in a year, while he himself was away, so they are also deeply connected.
Ok, we get to another refrain, Theo has stolen the black box and is in the other realm again, being held by the figures in black, with the lifesize black box in the background. He reaches up to the sky, towards the Sun, dust flying around him like ash. Then, a figure with a black mask whispers into his ear and the image changes back to the board room, the game board showing the black box is placed on the wine symbol, with the red pyramid behind it, where the mountain symbol should be.
We go back to the mountain dimension with lifesize black box. Theo is holding the black box from the game in his hand. Then the lifesize black box is burning and Theo is holding a burnt match in his hand.
He was playing a game that turned into reality in another dimension (like gods play games with human lives) and instead of winning or losing he sets the game on fire, or rather, the symbol of a player into fire.
We finish with the last refrain, red pyramid on board moving black box out of the Sun symbol to the wine symbol and the masked figure moving the black box from the Sun symbol to the mountain symbol.
The mask is taken off in front of the burning ashes of the black box, revealing Theo behind the mask. Hush.
Fun fact, Dionysus is also considered a masked god for both his many faces and fields, but also for being the god of theatre. There are theories with people believing that Dionysus and Apollo were the same god and they both have been associated with Hades.
Now, the lyrics of the song are still pretty clearly about Adonis, especially the verses, they fit him well and in the end he also had to travel between the realms to be with his different lovers. Another fun fact, besides Aphrodite and Persephone, Adonis was also loved by Apollo and Dionysus.
The visuals though make me also think of Icarus, the guy who flew too close to the sun while escaping from a labyrinth. Especially the image of him reaching towards the sun, with dust flying all around. It makes it look as if he was being burnt by the sun (although it could be a metaphor of him reaching towards the divine between the dark and the light). And of course there is the burning box behind him. Also, the lyrics
I've been told I'm a little overconfident and this could be my downfall, who am I? remind me of Icarus.
Of course, the characteristics of gods and various mythical creatures can overlap. But this song is playing a game. There is a riddle in the lyrics, there is a game in the video, some clues can be misleading, some questions might just be questions from the gamemaster and not about the character that plays it at all. The song is about human duality, heaven and hell inside of you, the deities only reflect the human feelings and the world around us.
It’s about escaping from the game and embracing all sides of you. Which actually brings us to Hermes, the god of games and tricks, guiding the souls to the underworld, travelling fast between the realms, considered a guide for inner journeys in Jungian psychology, invented fire and oh, is associated with interpretation, interesting.
In conclusion, I did not reach any definitive conclusion, but it surely makes one think of all the possibilities.
A final fun fact, Theo means gift from gods.
