Re: CANADA - WV76

A disappointing result, but still no regrets. Thank you to those who supported this entry, especially London for the 12.

So, what's next for me? To be honest, I don't know. My muse is starting to run a bit dry and I at least want to even my qualifying record before I move on. Sometimes it's really hard for me as someone who prefers a different vibe of a country in a competition where so much is put on mainstream music lately, I've done my best to show you my country from different angles and from different decades.

I'll figure something out

Re: CANADA - WV76: Deborah Cox

WV76 NEWS

CBMC has decided to go in a very interesting direction, and has chosen our artist for WV76. Defending the Canadian colors is Toronto R&B singer Deborah Cox!
(Yes, I want to prove I can be "hip" without sacrificing who I am, the song I'm sending was a favorite of mine in high school)

Deborah Cox - Who Do U Love

Video

Lyrics

Last night I slept alone
I stayed at home
For the first time since you've been gone babe
No friends to understand
To lend a helping hand
To ease the greatest pain I've ever known

How you walked away so easily
Still remains a mystery to me
Don't you remember that you promised me?
Yes you promised me that you'd never leave boy
But you went away babe
And it's such a shame
How could you turn your back on me?

[Chorus:]
If you really don't want me
If you really don't need me
If you really don't love me
Tell me who do you love?
If you really don't want me
If you really don't need me
If you really don't love me
Then who do you love?

I gave, gave everything
A man could ever need
I was there whenever you would call me baby
But somehow your feelings changed
You don't act the same
I guess you're not the man that I once knew at all

How you walked away so easily
Still remains a mystery to me
Don't you remember that you promised me?
Yes you promised me that you'd never leave boy
Now the love is gone babe
Tell me what went wrong
How could you leave me hanging on? Oh baby

[Chorus x 2]

I once was blind but baby now I see
That I'm not the one
Who can fill your every need
I painted a picture so clear, it's reality
Now I know, yes I know
That you're not the one for me
Ooooh baby, oh yeah
Who do you love baby?
If you don't want me
If you don't need me

How could you walk away from me?
Baby you promised you'd never leave
Slept alone since you've been gone
The greatest pain I've ever known
Oh babe, oh babe oh yeah

[Chorus x 2]

Alright, who are you and what did you do with my Duchess of Canada? IOTAP

Seriously, I'm still slightly amazed that this was your entry, but it was a delight to see nonetheless! :D Best of luck with this interesting new direction xcheer

Re: CANADA - WV77

I need some input from you guys:

As I've said before, I've been doing my best to show you Canadian music from different angles without sacrificing my belief in the songs I choose, yet these past 2 editions have been hard on me because I don't really handle flopping well - I guess getting drawn into very strong semis have not been helpful for one. Is there anything I can improve on, and if so, is there any kind of music that can help regain my confidence as Canadian juror? I'm kind of stuck and my muse has not what it's been since I took the country back in WV46. I seriously need your help.

Re: CANADA - WV77

Hmm... it's hard to say. As someone who's given you high support in some semis and blanked you in others, my personal opinion is - maybe stay away from the 90s-00s midtempo chart-pop for a bit? While there have been exceptions, it feels like most of my 0s to you have been for your midtempo entries, which you've been sending quite a few of lately (including this edition).

Looking over your history I think I've enjoyed your entries more often than not, but 'I kinda enjoyed it' isn't usually enough to get top points from me. Generally I give my highest points to unusual & creative songs that leave an impact on me, or are from an underrepresented genre; while I do like plenty of midtempo chart pop songs, they all seem to blend into one big amorphous blob when they make up half a semifinal, and it's hard for something to stand out from that blob and get high points. Sure, chart pop may do well in WV, but there's so much of it that by the end of most semis I'm usually screaming for anything that isn't more midtempo pop. You've been sending a lot of entries that fall into that 'forgettable pop' category for me, and kind of ending in that 7th-to-15th range in most semis - which isn't bad, but doesn't get you what you need to qualify.

Given that - perhaps go with something a little bolder, or a style less common in WV. Some heavier rock, or metal, or ethnic, opera, rap, instrumental, funk... whatever you like, really, but I would say to switch it up a little more. I can't guarantee that it'll lead you to success (do keep in mind that taking advice from good 'ol 33% qual rate Zobo may not be the most reliable of ideas - you're already more successful than I am!), but perhaps it's worth a try. I'd obviously recommend getting multiple opinions, though, given how split people's tastes are in WV.

Also: I do have a couple of specific song suggestions that I'd almost certainly give high scores for if you sent them, but from how I've interpreted your post I get the feeling you're looking for ideas more than songs at the moment. Though I'm happy to recommend some stuff if you want!

One more important thing to keep in mind is that, really... you're not doing all that badly. You've currently got something like a 40-45% qual rate, right? And, when WV is made up of 21-ish-song semis with 9 qualifiers each, the average qual rate per player should be... 43%. You're pretty much smack-bang in the middle of the player list in terms of semi-final success.

Sure, you're going to have painful misses all the time, but the same goes for everyone (hell, I miss out two in every three editions, and I only send stuff I love). Every song in the contest is sent by someone who only wants to see others appreciate it - that's kind of the point - and so, whenever those 57% of people in each semi miss out on the final, they'll be feeling down. It's just how things work. However much you improve your qualification rate, the flops won't go away; you kind of just need to get used to them, enjoy the good times, and appreciate that other people's songs you also like are making it through.

Regardless, best of luck for future editions! I know how it feels to miss out on the final with something you adore, so I'm hoping you can get that taste of sweet sweet qualification again before too long.

Re: CANADA - WV77

Here's a couple of teasers for my WV77 entry..

*It's a classic piece of Canadian storyteller folk from the late 70s
*It's one of the artist's best-loved songs

And...

*It's a true story

WORLDVISION 77 IBIZA :ca::es:

Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

*A true story from November 1975*

Video

Lyrics

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
Then later that night when the ship's bell rang
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
When the wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too
'Twas the witch of November come stealin'
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashin'
When afternoon came it was freezing rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck
Saying, "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya."
At seven PM it grew dark, it was then
He said, "Fellas, it's been good to know ya."
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went out of sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below, Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered

In a rustic old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early

Re: CANADA - WV78

Well, another flop but 4th in REJU is still pretty good. It was just so hard because not many people who would have really appreciated the song were in my semi, but I'm thankful for those who did support it. Thank you for letting me share a piece of Canadian history in song.

I have my next entry in mind. Indie-rock seemed to work well for me, so there's another song that I hope will give me a positive result. Wish me luck!

The Sheepdogs - Feeling Good

Video

Lyrics

Are you close to mine
Or could you blow my mind
Cause the heat is up
Already passed over time
Well I'm here to say
I got a better way
Nothing brings me down
With how I feel today

Feelin' Good oh like you know I should
Got the pressure beat just like you know I would
Feelin' good oh like you know I should
Got the pressure beat
Yeah!

Back and forth again
With my rememberin'
Tell me who, or what, why, or where and when?
Comin' back this time
I gotta know the rhyme
And I feel the clear
Never gon' take what's mine

Feelin' Good oh like you know I should
Got the pressure beat just like you know I would
Feelin' good oh like you know I should
Got the pressure beat
Yeah!

Back and forth again
With my rememberin'
Well I guess loser go
Money will make amends
Well I'm here to say
I got a better way
Nothing brings me down
With how I feel today.

Feelin' Good oh like you know I should
Got the pressure beat just like you know I would
Feelin' good oh like you know I should
Got the pressure beat
Yeah!

Amaaazing track! I think alt-rock Steph might just be my favourite Steph. Canada has a lot of cool alternative rock tracks, and you've sent yet another of them. I hope this does well for you. It might encourage me to go for some more rock myself soon. Best of luck to Canadaxcrossed

Re: CANADA - WV79

Thanks again to those that supported my last entry, especially that :10: from Midtjylland! I appreciate it!

As I have mentioned, I am sending an instrumental track for my next entry. I've sent several during my time in Switzerland, but this is the first time that I will be sending one for Canada. It's my hope that people across all pots will appreciate it and my current 4-edition DNQ streak gets turned around
