LOL I first thought someone joked when saw the renamed thread. Will see if she prepared song worth of final. I don't remember her 2014 song but I think it felt decent for me.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2018

Okay so who's going to be the Dami Im/Delta Goodrem/The Veronicas of 2018.
Because every year :au: has an over-hyped rumour that ends up being false.
And then who's going to be the actual representative.

Okay so the over-hyped rumour this year was Ricki-Lee while the actual representative was Jesice Mauboy.
About Jesice Mauboy I hope she has improved since her shaky 2014 interval performance.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2018 - Jessica Mauboy

Ew... What a disappointment! Not that I expected a miracle or anything, but out of all the options they must have, I expected to see a name I didn't know to keep some fraction of faith in the musical department.

A couple of years ago, when some people asked Mauboy to come back, I thought it was impossible because she had her time (kind of) and - given her performance in Copenhagen - it was just as well.

I'll wait for the song before totally crucifying Australia 2018, but I have difficulties expecting a song that's not safe and uninteresting, again.

Her participation back in 2014 was a disaster to me: she had no voice, no stage presence, the song was unremarkable... If the EBU hadn't made an event out of it, I'm not sure many people would have cared.

Good luck to her, anyway. I'd be happy to eat my words and listen to a song that suits her vocals while getting off the beaten track. But I definitely won't hold my breath.

I'm afraid it will be yet another safe entry, her interval act entry in 2014 was dreadful and vocally she was off-key almost for the entire time... juries will probably boost Australia again, I'll wait until I hear the song until I can make a judgement...

I liked Jessica at the 2014 interval act and so I´m quite optimistic about Australia´s entry, but of course it mainly depends on the song :-)

Pretty much my feelings, yeah. She's got a good voice in the right circumstances, so I'm thinking and hoping she can do better than that measly 2014 performance if given some more preparation time, a full team and a better song – but she wouldn't have been my first choice of artist.

Like, really, this makes 4/4 times now that we have... internally sent a Sony Music-signed mainstream pop singer who came first/second in Australian Idol/The X Factor. Some variety would be nice, please :?

Gosh, the internal picks so far this year aren't exactly filling me with excitement. A quick youtube search shows me that Jessica has gone from thumping (rather fun) R&B pop numbers in her early career to dull, wishy-washy contemporary pop ballads today. Her voice sounds good though, especially when she's singing deeper notes like in "The Day Before I Met You". I hope they don't go the ballad route again at the very least. When Australia joined the contest I was excited, thinking of the possibilities and I just imagined you guys bringing a lot of fun, colour and charm to the contest, but it's been the complete opposite so far. I really was hoping this would be the year you took a big risk. I wanted some psych rock (as you're so good at it)! I wanted an NF even. Is it just my goldfish memory or was one rumoured/announced? I'll wait for the song anyway. So far i've only actively disliked "The Sound of Silence" and found the other two Australian entries tolerable, so there's that at least.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2018 - Jessica Mauboy

I wanted an NF even. Is it just my goldfish memory or was one rumoured/announced?

There were a number of comments from our HoD mid-late this year saying "we'd like to do an NF for 2018", but nothing was properly announced. I think it's something they're looking at, but it seems to be taking longer than expected to set up the right foundations for whatever reason.

Assuming 2018 isn't our last year in the contest, an NF might still be on the cards for 2019 – the rumours have been getting a little stronger with each passing year. From memory, 2015 was sort of "yeah, a NF would be cool, but we don't have the time"; 2016 was "feel free to send your entries in whoever you are, and we could possibly do an NF with them, but no guarantees"; 2017 was "we're looking into the systems to set up an NF now that we've had a couple of years of experience"; and recently, for 2018, we got the aforementioned "hoping to do an NF for the year" sort of comments. So it does feel like they're working on something behind the scenes, but... slowly.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure I'd trust the Australian voting public with an NF; if it drew the wrong crowd, we could just end up with a joke act or the most stereotypically Eurovision-sounding song on offer. Even moreso than the UK, I think, a common perception of the contest here is that "it's that funny European thing with sequins and costume reveals and politics, and it's hilarious that we're in it, so we should send our biggest joke and have fun laughing about it all". Now, I feel that perception has improved in recent years with our strong results and some more serious winning entries – and SBS would probably try to avoid becoming a laughingstock – but the whole concept of an NF has me iffy, as cool as it could be.

I wouldn't necessarily complain if we were to hold one, and I'd rush to vote in it if we did, but before we try to set up an NF with three or six or ten or whatever varied songs, we should probably first try to find some variety for the one internal song we find every year. Something rock, folk, orchestral, dance, country, whatever it may be – sending something different internally this year would give me a least a little more hope that we could fill an NF with something more than just ten takes on contemporary pop and maybe a joke entry.

I'm not sure Jessica Mauboy will be the one to break that trend, which has me worried; I've got the feeling SBS is thinking "hey, we've got a formula that's given us three consecutive top-10s, so why change it?". I was hoping the televote flop this year would change their strategy, but apparently not. Perhaps we need an NQ to get us out of just playing the safe game.

Anyway, TL;DR: There were numerous NF rumours and plans, but nothing in the way of promises or announcements yet. Perhaps next year.

Well they see it works with the juries so they stick to the formula, and let's be frank here, the juries so far overboost Australia to the degree it's not even remotely subtle. Sure if you'll have a song worthy, but that wasn't the case really.

I for one would like to hear something less safe for a change, the problem with the Australian entries so far are not just how safe they are, they are outdated and boring aswell, musically it's just completely empty for me, completely soulless.

From Sia to Jessica Mauboy
What a disappointment
I don't even know why they published that video and made everyone expect big names.
They even said "no, you'll never get them" to hype the fans even more.
Who is Jessica Mauboy to reject such an offer? Her most viewed Youtube video has 5 million views, probably her ESC entry will be the most viewed song of hers.

I don't think anybody was really expecting Sia. Not reasonably, at least. There's never been any actual reason to think she'd agree – no plausible rumours or anything – apart from fans saying "I want her to represent us".

Though I do agree that the video SBS published was silly. I wish they hadn't hyped it up and made it sound like some amazing artist we'd never believe they'd get... she's already gone before, is roughly as popular as our other contestants have been, comes from the exact same career background as our previous three and has stated numerous times that she'd like to come back for a proper attempt. Real surprise you had for us there, SBS.

Not that I bought into their hype for a second, because that's just what our Eurovision delegation seems to do... they overhype things, always say how great we are, and every year is "something fantastic that's got a real chance at winning". But hey, questionable artist choice aside, it all comes down to the song, and I'd love for my pessimism here to be proven wrong. Time will tell.

What video is everyone referring to? Did people really expect Sia though?

I was atleast hoping that maybe, just maybe, we'd get Delta Goodrem or The Veronicas... or even Kylie (highly unlikely sure, but she's not on the top of her career anymore and hasn't been for around 15 years so)...

I like Jessica but I'm afraid she'll get a pretty boring and mainstream song. The only Australian entry I liked so far was Tonight Again.
Btw, is it just me or could this be a sign that this is Australia's last participation? Like they started with Jessica and they're ending it with her.
(Okay, maybe that's just wishful thinking because I don't want them or any other country to take part in both Eurovision and Eurovision Asia at the same time)

EBU is too invested in them so I think they're here to stay....
