if isaiah went through with awful vocals i'm not surprised she also qualified, since her song was more commercially appealling than his

if her vocals don't improve i can at least expect an iconic navarro moment!!!!!!!

And I hate the Polish opinions here cause you didn't qualify, because the pitch was off.

If we qualified it still does not change the fact that there were countries that could take Australia's place and deserved it more. Not necessarily Poland.

Song itself was not that bad, but again - I'd rather see Malta advancing over this, Romania would be also a better choice tbh. The performance was just decent, I wasn't sweeped off my feet at any second. And the vocals weren't very good either, definitely should not have been a safe qualifier. She was way better than Isaiah, but sorry - it still was soulless and unoriginal. But yeah, each to their own I guess.

A comment I've seen on Youtube about the starting positions of Australia in the final: :D

"Australia
2015: 12th
2016: 13th
2017: 14th
2018: 16th

Why did they skip number 15?"

So I just watched the performance back, and there's a moment near the end where Jessica, dressed in what I'm sure is tin foil, does a very speedy but ~80-point turn bent over as if to do an impression of a Roomba. And in that genuinely hilarious moment, I can't help but derive some form of deeply ironic appreciation. This is particularly weird because the concept of irony is lost on Australia's Eurovision history. It's almost like they took my demand advice to "reflect why they wanted to be a part of Eurovision for 30 years rather than how to come top 5 once they get there." More power to 'em. Please don't lose the Roomba twirl, Jessica; it makes me crack up every time.

"reflect why they wanted to be a part of Eurovision for 30 years rather than how to come top 5 once they get there."

I was going to say "this is brilliant advice" - and I still want to say that - but then I remembered that for a large chunk of Aussie fans, the answer to "why they wanted to be a part of Eurovision for 30 years" would just be "glitter, ABBA, low-budget joke acts and making fun of Europe, preferably all at the same time". :? (Though admittedly, that may at least be less bland than our current strategy...)

So I agree with your sentiment, but, uh, I'm not sure I'd trust the opposite approach either. That said, I'd very much appreciate some sort of change to the current approach of "let's just keep sending Sony-signed talent show contestants with some midtempo ballad/pop jury-bait composed by DNA"

Not a very good performance tbh? Or? xshrug

The good aspects of it is that she oozes positivity and energy and in that way connects with the audience, but vocally she was often off-point and what was going on on stage felt kind of random, the styling didn't do her justice either. I dunno what to say. I think she deserved to qualify because it was one of the better songs of this semi and although quite generic it is still a quite enjoyable and cute song, but if the juries that normally judge countries hard on their vocals (although I do think they should look at the overall package and song firstly), and then kind of ignored these sore vocals then I dunno really and it really seems they judge countries on different criteria where Australia always have some free pass xshrug But yeah, I don't want to be a "vocal-snob", so it was good enough for a qualifier and deserved.

I thought the performance needs improvement, however, the Eurovision village certainly got behind Australia and the amount of Australian fans here in Lison is quite amazing lol. I'm glad this got through I like it but maybe a slightly better performance tonight at the jury final then the final tomorrow night may help it.

Could easily see this dead last in the final if it weren't for the fact this is Australia.

Australia was fine. The song is good, but we can discuss about the staging. To me it was ok and it fit well with the song. It seems they had some sort of Aboriginal inspired moves in second part of the song?!

Listened to the song again and think she didn't sing well at all. She didn't hit the notes many times, plus she should really change her dess and make other moves. All in all, the song is not my case.

It seemed to me Jessica was in need to get off the stage. Everything felt so hurried to me. And I like the song.

People who still believe this are just delusional

"Russia qualifies every year no matter what," "Azerbaijan qualifies every year..."
yeah lol

Russia sent an atrocious song and Azerbaijan was in a very strong semi final. Also, the reason for Russia's success is mainly bloc voting while Australia is favoured by the juries.

I might probably be one of the few who thinks Dami won the jury vote fair and that Guy Sebastian got a fair placing within the jury. Well probably many ESC fans disagree with Isaiah's jury ranking and that was probably when everyone started with the favourism things towards Australia from the juries.

But I'm fine with Isaiah's fourth place within the juries as I like the song and his voice

You're right about us being favoured by the juries, at least so far, but it's not that they love Australia itself for any particular reason; rather, we just keep sending specifically jury-oriented songs. Our last three entries have all been composed by DNA, who use that contemporary, dramatic, midtempo pop sound that a lot of jurors seem to like.

That said, this year might be a bit of a weird case... I'm not sure the vocals were quite there enough to justify as much jury support as previously, and We Got Love is charting surprisingly well in comparison to other entries, so it could be better on the televote than we expect. Don't want to predict anything specific one way or another though, except for the fact that we (justifiably) won't be winning with that performance.

To be fair, I think Guy Sebastian and Dami Im had great songs and performances (although I would say that Dami was slightly overrated but she still should be in top 10). Isaiah's song was amazing but the performance was poor and he was off key a lot from what I can remember. That's why I don't think it was fair for the jury to place him that high, he should have failed to qualify or be dead last in the final. I think Finland should have qualified instead, and in fact Finland was 10th in the televoting and Australia 15th in the semifinal.

She needed a dress or outfit that would allow her to move morw freely and not look like she was about to flash as at any moment. Definitely not the most flattering clothing choice I've ever seen...

But she treated the performance like it was the last performance she was ever going to do, so it was great to see such passion come through ;)
