Re: AUSTRALIA 2014 - Jessica Mauboy - Never Be The Same

Well I don't need to go into detail, but you mentioned geography. Azerbaijan is part of Europe on a technicality. I, and many, don't consider it to be a European country.

Yes, and so is Israel. But no need to precise that both countries are much much much closer to Europe than Australia, right?
If one day, Australia is allowed to compete, then let's rename the contest.

I don't have anything against Australia, but it's out of place in a European event. This shouldn't even raise questions.

If you are going to argue a point, such as geography, and then say it doesn't need to be precise, your point is no longer precise. In terms of culture, viewership, ethnicity (let's be real here, nearly all of us have European ancestry. There are very very few indigenous Australians without European roots, including Jessica Mauboy) we are European. 113 years after federation, we still identify as European in censuses, we speak a European language, we observe European traditions - not just British ones - and that's just the way it is.

Europe is not just a continent, it's a community. Geography has no bearing on what people choose to believe and how they choose to identify. We are a European country, and whatever you say won't change people's beliefs. Not for maaany many generations, since Europe is where we are from, and we are extremely aware of that. Why else would ESC be so popular?

When one talks about Europe, it's first of all geographically-speaking, I'm sorry.

Australians are not the only ones to have European ancestry : I don't think it would be right to say the United States or Argentina, for example, are European countries. The fact that the people feels European, that's another story. Still if most of the participating countries so far are localized in Europe, it's maybe for a reason.

Also, might I add, that even though Australia is overwhelmingly British/Irish influenced, there are so many different ethnicities in Australia that add their own flavour. The Middle Eastern population in Western Sydney, Italians in Melbourne, Africans in South Brisbane and the Maoris on the Gold Coast all influence the culture in many ways. Not forgetting Aborigines! Australia has so much more to offer than what you saw on Thursday night that places in Europe itself might not necessary have (ok, Italy has Italians.. but they aren't wogboys ;)). If Australia was a part of Eurovision, it wouldn't be a UK copycat, I can guarantee, and it would find its place quite nicely.

Yes, I agree, geographically-speaking. But as you even said, Eurovision is not so much geographically speaking. Eurovision is a cultural event - anyone can be CULTURALLY EUROPEAN. And Australia is. Argentina is. USA is (arguably... they're just in their own little bubble of awesomeness tbh..).

If Argentina and the US showed the same enthusiasm for ESC as we do, then I say, let them join. But they don't, so they're irrelevant. As you can see, in the last 10 years or so, Eurovision has become less centralised in Europe. In the last 50 years, it has been less centralised in Western Europe. Now it's becoming worldwide.

Globalisation, bitch. It ain't a myth

Even if I would have :au: participate over countries such as :kz:, I'd rather have no more countries joining the Eurovision tbh.

Thought of the day - should we change the name of the Olympic Games because they aren't hosted in Olympia anymore?

Create WorldVision if you like (which would be absolutely awesome actually) but leave our contest as it is xsnooty the original idea was to unify Europe and that's how it's shall remain.

If countries are withdrawing, it's not because they don't feel European, it's mainly because they either fail to qualify or face economic problems.

By the way, I don't see why being interested in the contest would make a country legitimate to take part in it, wherever it is in the world. If Australia was mentioned for several years during the shows, it's first because there's a lot of interest, but also because it's far away. If you were closer geographically, there wouldn't have been so much fuss about it.

Australians can feel as European as they want, they are still part of another continent, and that's why Eurovision is not suitable for them. And you said it yourself : "Worldwide". Europe is much smaller than that.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2014 - Jessica Mauboy - Never Be The Same

Next year will be the 60th edition of Eurovision, I don't think that'll happen. Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria are likely to come back. Serbia, Croatia & Cyprus may return too.

And if it happens to have less participants than this year, than so be it, one semi-final will be enough. There are Eurovision fans here and there all over the world, that doesn't mean that Mexico or South Africa are legitimate to take part. Personally, I found it nice when they mentioned in the past that people in Australia were watching the contest, but that's all. Inviting a singer this year was excessive, could it be more random? We're in Denmark after all, it was out of place.

I don't know why it's a fan wish to get Australia taking part, I mean it's on the other side of the planet, there should be a Wordvision then, not Eurovision. Anyway, one country wouldn't make up for the series of withdrawal, if it were to happen.

Oh yeah, I forgot the 60th anniversary, I also think a lot of countries will come back and Poland will probably stay now with their success.

Turkey is not coming back, they have Turkvision.

1. I never mentioned countries withdrawing due to how they feel
2. See the pic I posted
3. Australia is their own continent. No one else is on it. Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, since there'd be no Australvision, it can be Europe if it wants because
4. See the pic I posted

And yep I did say it, Eurovision is WORLDWIDE. Doesn't mean the name needs to change, and in the same sense, the prefix 'Euro' doesn't necessarily mean the place Europe. Stop trying to make the same point over and over so I can stop shutting it down with the same point :s I have no more to say.

Eurovision has/had participants from Europe, Asia and Africa, so Australia participating won't ruin Eurovision

It's getting childish in there, and this discussion starts going round in circles. We won't agree anyway.

All I can say now : keep wishing.
