But they don't pay the party. In fact, Turkey is out of it.
I doubt that The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden or Switzerland could pay as much as the big 5 pays. Those are countries with a good life-quality standard but not a big economies like big 5 (even in a deep crisis)

Luckily you didn't mention Finland, as many people think that everybody is rich in Nordic countries. Yes, Nordics have the money to pay the shows but to support EBU bills is another story.
Yes i forgot to mention Finland !
You are very rich, you have money to pay for Esc.

Seriously how could a country of 5 mio. people pay as much as a country with 60 mio. people? I don't understand your point. Even a country like Norway couldn't do this.

Most people underestimate the need for the Big 5. Their money helps fund the show for many countries, Sweden etc are rich and could put on a show without much help if any. But say Moldova, Armenia, Serbia or even Greece win. How can they rival previous competitions? they're simply too poor to put on a good one. This is where that money comes in to help them put on a good show and not too embarrass themselves. On the list of the countries he mentioned, only Russia realistically could some how be a big 5 member, they have even previously mentioned them wanting to join the big 5 to make the big 6.

Sorry AshleyWright although the Big 5 pay the highest feeds to EBU the money is not given to any hosts of the ESC no matter which country it is, the host will have to pay themselves. Thats why the ESC 1980 was held in The Netherlands and not in Israel.

Well literally speaking only EBU decide if a 6th country should become a "Big 6" and that country would have to be the 6th highest payer country...... do you really think that only Russia can afford to be that 6th country??

So true apparently! Hoping that DR will give us further insight how this works during preparations in København. Sincerely not saying the big 5 isn't wanted, just that the big 5 prequalify rule clearly isn't justified by economic reasons. <tease>Perhaps a needed delusion to save big 5ers honour and to feed the butthurts when things go bad? :D</tease>

I was under the impression that they do help put money towards broadcasters who would struggle to put on a show, should the win. And yes i do think Russia could make it. If they've expressed the wish to join the big 5 to make a big 6 then they surely must be able to afford it, or make the funds available at least.

I thougt so too. I remember I read somewhere that the rule was created in 1976 when Sweden withdrew from the contest, because SR didn't have enough money to host the contest again if Sweden would have won.

This is just my speculation, but I think The big 5 rule was created to prevent the 1996 situation when Germany didn't reach the final. Germany's presence in the final is necessary for the contest (the biggest payer and the biggest tv ratings)

I like big 5, sure it is a bit unfair but hey, no party without 'em! And it's always a performance you havent seen in the final if you've already watched the semi's ;)
