Germany have won the Eurovision Song Contest twice in their history, yet in the past ten years they have seen Bottom 3 results six times and only reached the Top 10 once. Whether it be song choice, the live staging, or insufficient pre-show promotion, something has consistently stood in their way of Eurovision success in the last decade. After the 2022 contest, in which two other “Big Five underdogs” UK and Spain managed to reach the Top 3 for the first time in at least twenty years, Eurofans will be eager to see Germany achieve a high placement soon as well.
The work to achieve that goal begins this week, as the German broadcaster ARD have revealed their plans for a national final to determine their artist for 2023. The “Unser Lied” (Our Song) format will return this year, as Unser Lied für Liverpool, with applications open to the general public via their website until November 28.

A team of music experts will work with the German ESC delegation to evaluate the submissions, with advisory input from German pop radio stations. A preliminary group of finalists will be chosen for consideration for the final show, those the size of this group has yet to be determined.
For the first time, ARD will accept applications via the app TikTok, where musical artists can submit their songs publicly using the hashtag #UnserLiedFürLiverpool. The broadcaster will subject a group of these songs to a public vote for a place in the preliminary group of finalists.
Unser Lied für Liverpool will air sometime in March, and the winner will be selected by televote on the night, and ARD’s regional pop radio stations will host online voting before the final as well.
This spring, Malik Harris won Germany 12 Points, a national final organized by ARD in collaboration with the regional broadcaster NDR. He performed the song “Rockstars” in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest and placed 25th, receiving televote points from Austria, Switzerland, and Estonia.
