As is tradition, NRK has officially opened the submission period for Melodi Grand Prix 2024 entries about a month after the close of Eurovision 2023. And this year NRK will introduce a new change to the rules of MGP.

This rule change will allow songs to be considered for the Norwegian national final even if they have been publicly released after September 1st – a departure from the long-standing tradition that songs cannot be released publicly until the Monday prior to their competition show. The broadcaster is hoping that this change will allow MGP editors to have a dialogue about material that is already released, and increase the public’s speculation in September regarding which songs or artists might be seen in MGP.ย Their press release also states “this will also give fans the opportunity to put pressure on artists and the MGP editors with requests for specific songs and artists.”

Additional rules stated on the submission page indicate that only three songs may be submitted per composer, producer, or artist and that it’s encourage that registered entries have at least one Norwegian songwriter on the team. The submission window is open until August 31st at 23:59 and entries can be submitted on NRK’s website here.

Norway has had a long string of success in the contest, with seven top ten placements over the last decade. Their most recent representatitve Alessandra came third in the televote across Europe and the Rest of the World, which resulted in a triumphant fifth place in Liverpool last month.
