The 16 finalists for the Malta Junior Eurovision Contest have been revealed and are set to compete against one another on October 2nd. Maltese broadcaster PBS accepted submissions from June 25th through August 15th. Entries were chosen by a professional jury nominated by PBS in alignment with the broadcaster’s rules and regulations.
The selected artists are:
- Emma Kate Formosa – Bounce
- Gaia Gambuzza – Diamonds in the skies
- Shaznay Mangion – Heartbeat
- Kaylin Mallia – Here I Am
- Aaliyah Cassar – Infinty
- Rih and Bri – Karma
- Cassidy Gauci – Light Up
- Naomi Busuttil – Little Cheeky
- Cesca Galea – See the Invisible
- Kayleen Mercieca – Shooting Star
- Andrea Camilleri – Spark
- Ma Girlz – Stereo
- Charelle Micallef – The Extra Miles
- Kensley Ciappara – Tliet Xadini
- Isis Jade Miller – Unbreakable
- Geneve Dimech – With You By My Side
Traditionally MJESC will feature at least one returning artist from the prior edition, and this year is no exception. The female duo Rih and Bri have been shortlisted once again for the selection after participating last year with the song “Drops Like Fire“. They failed to reach the top 3 of the contest, so their placement is unknown.
The televised national final will be judged based on a jury (75%) and public (25%) vote. The top three songs will be revealed, and in the event of a tie the jury vote will decide. The broadcaster has hinted that all 16 entries will be released at some point before the selection airs next month.
Malta’s past in Junior Eurovision
As a founding member of the Junior Eurovision Contest in 2003, Malta has competed 17 times and won twice. Their first win in 2013, “The Start” by Gaia Cauchi, marked their return to the contest after a two year hiatus in 2011-2012. In 2015 Malta won the contest a second time with “Not My Soul” by Destiny Chukunyere, who later went on to represent Malta in the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. Destiny had originally been selected to represent Malta in the 2020 edition of the contest, which was cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
