Another piece of sad news today. According to Eurovoix, the national broadcaster of Luxembourg, RTL, has confirmed that they will not be making their long-awaited return to the contest in 2017. As a result the next contest will be the 24th contest in a row without one of the competition’s most successful nations.
Luxembourg was a dominant prescence in the contest up until their withdrawal in 1993, and despite not taking part for over two decades still only trail Ireland and Sweden in victories, with five (alongside France and the United Kingdom). In recent years there have been strong links between the broadcaster and a return to the contest, including around the creation of the Eurovision semi-final, but nothing has arisen thus far.
Andorra are the only other country to state their declination to participate in next year’s contest in Ukraine.
