Unfortunately things seem to be taking a turn in the planning of Junior Eurovision 2021 in Paris, as health officials reported that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been reported in the Paris region today. In response, the EBU and France Télévisions have decided to eliminate the audience for the dress rehearsal shows that are traditionally open to those who purchased tickets. This is likely to reduce the risk of transmission among audience members, crew, delegations, and most importantly the artists themselves.
In a joint statement they said:
“In response to the exceptional health situation in Europe right now, and to ensure the presence on stage of each of our 19 artists, France Télévisions has decided to only admit an audience to the Live Show of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest on Sunday 19 December.
Those who have booked tickets for the Dress Rehearsal on Saturday 18 December should contact La Seine Musicale directly. They can receive a full refund or transfer their tickets to the Live Show on Sunday 19 December.
Tickets are still available for the live broadcast of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest via the La Seine Musicale website where health and safety measures for attending the show can also be found.”
In addition to the lack of a crowd for rehearsals, the French government announced that all travelers entering France will need a negative PCR test within 24 hours if they are coming from outside of the EU. Covid passes are also being required for people to enter enclosed areas such as bars and restaurants. Artists and delegations are required to be in a “health bubble” and asked not to leave their hotel unless necessary – similar to the expectations of Eurovision 2021 – and will need to complete a PCR test every 48 hours before entering the arena.
The producers are also working closely with the national police and the Gendarmerie in the event of a security concern within the venue or in the surrounding area.
We will keep you updated as more information comes available.
