Despite the hugely impressive run of results since their surprise comeback in 2011, Italy’s national broadcaster has only shown the Eurovision final on RAI 2, with the main channel instead featuring other programming during the night of the contest. That is, until now – thanks to a third place finish and televote victory from Il Volo in 2015, RAI have finally decided that Eurovision deserves full promotion in Italy and will therefore show the Eurovision final on RAI 1 in 2016, the first time this will happen since 1991!
Today, the broadcaster has also confirmed that San Remo will be used as Italy’s selection tool once more, with the winner of the Campioni (established performers) section of the competition being invited to the contest in Stockholm.
Il Volo represented Italy in 2015 with “Grande Amore” and were the overwhelming public vote favourites across Europe, however they only finished third overall after being marked down by Europe’s juries.
Will Italy be able to achieve even higher results in 2016?
