Iceland has decided – Sigga, Beta, and Elín will represent them in Eurovision 2022!

This weekened witnessed the final of Söngvakeppnin in Iceland, and concluded a three week process to select their 2022 Eurovision act. The final was once again held in the RVK studios in Reykjavík and was hosted by Björg Magnúsdóttir, Jón Jónsson and Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir. The show also featured an interval act from Eurovision artists Daði Freyr (Iceland 2020 and 2021) and Tusse (Sweden 2021).

Before the Show

Prior to tonight, ten entries competed across two semi-finals for a chance to perform in the final. The semi-finals selected two entries for the final through a televote process only, while the organizers assigned a wildcard to Amarosis. In the final the artists must perform the version of their entry they would perform if selected for Eurovision (Icelandic or English). Stefan Óli and Katla chose to keep their song in Icelandic, while Amarosis performed entirely in English. Daughters of Reykjavík (Reykjavíkurdætur) performed the mixed language version of their song which features English and Icelandic lyrics. Sigga, Beta and Elín also performed in Icelandic but they did not submit an English version of their song, and therefore did not have an option.

The running order for the show tonight was as follows:

1. Katla – “Þaðan af”
2. Amarosis – “Don’t You Know”
3. Daughters of Reykjavík – “Turn This Around”
4. Stefán Óli – “Ljósið”
5. Sigga, Beta, and Elín – “Með hækkandi sól

The Voting Format and First Round

Söngvakeppnin utilizes a superfinal structure to decide their Eurovision act every year, meaning that two rounds of voting were utilized. In the first round a 50/50 voting structure between televote and jury was used to decide the two songs that would advance to the superfinal. The total number of votes cast would not be revealed until after the show concluded.

The jury for tonight’s show was comprised of:

1. Daði Freyr (Eurovision 2020 and 2021 – Iceland)
2. Tusse (Eurovision 2021 – Sweden)
3. Sóley Stefánsdóttir (Icelandic Singer)
4. Ragnheiður Gröndal (Söngvakeppni sjónvarpsin 2008 artist)
5. Heidi Välkkilä (Head of Press – Finland)
6. Barry Van Corneval (Eurovision in Concert Organizer – Netherlands)
7. Stig Karlsen (Head of Delegation – Norway)

After the votes had been cast by both the televote and jury, Daughters of Reykjavík and Sigga, Beta, and Elín won the highest vote total and would move on in the selection. This means that Stefán Óli, Katla, and Amarosis were eliminated from the competition.

The Superfinal and Winner

In the second round, an additional round of televoting was conducted and the two acts took to the stage to perform once again. This second televote result was aggregated with the combined total of votes cast in the first round to decide the winner. If that confuses you consider it like this: First round total + Second Round total = Total votes and winner.

Once the second round of voting had ended, it was announced that Sigga, Beta, and Elín had won the voting and would represent Iceland in Turin this coming May. They will perform in the second half of the first semi-final on May 10th.
