The President of ERT has revealed plans to choose the Greek entry for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. A committee of music professionals and a committee comprising of members of the public will make the selection. This weighting of the two committees will match the newly introduced weighting at the Eurovision Song Contest, with the public having a 50.6% say in the selection and the music professionals having a 49.4% say in the result.
The Greek public will select the country‘s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest by voting through an “Audience Committee“. This committee will be formed of 70 members who will get to choose the song they think Greece should send to the competition.
Those wishing to participate in the public committee can register their interest on the official website in the special section set up which can be found here. The submission period began yesterday at 10 am CET and will last for 48 hours, closing at 10 am CET on Saturday 10th December.
A lottery will be conducted to select the 70 members of the Eurovision Audience Committee. Eligibility criteria have been established by the organizers to ensure fairness, impartiality, and age representation in the audience. Specifically, 25 individuals between 18 and 24 years old, 20 people aged 25–34, 15 people 35–44 years old and 10 individuals 45 or older will be selected on this committee. This approach provides a unique opportunity for members of all ages to participate in one of Europe’s most iconic music events.
Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest
In 1974, Greece made its first appearance in the Eurovision Song Contest with Marinella singing “Krasi, Thalassa kai t’agori mou“, placing 11th with 7 points. Three years later Paschalis, Marianna, Robert and Bessy achieved a 5th place finish for the country with their track “Mathima solfege“. In 2001 Antique delivered Greece‘s best result up to that point when they finished in 3rd place thanks to their song “I Would Die For You“ becoming a major European hit. Finally, in 2005 Helena Paparizou won for Greece its only victory so far at Eurovision when her entry “My Number One” received an impressive 230 points.
