With participation confirmed and RTP saying that they will rework and remodel the format of our NF, let's hope we'll finally be competitive for once!

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

I'm so glad Portugal will return! I'm a little bit afraid we won't have a big difference from the past 'cause it seems they will stick with Festival da Cançao (maybe I'm wrong) so I don't know if this reworked format will be good enough. But my fingers are crossed, I have Portugal in my heart!

Let's hope that this will be the case. Sadly we all know what happened last time when Portugal returned :(

BTW Portugal, please keep singing in Portuguese xheart

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

I honestly think we should jump on the English bandwagon as long as nearly all other countries keep playing that card. The ideal thing would be with some dramatic passage in Portuguese à la Jamala. Or something to that effect.

Unfortunately I don't see artists talented enough to fight for the win so we can only hope that that man who won the eurolottery a few weeks ago is a Eurovision fanatic and will hire one those top Swedish composers. Or then we could always pull a Serhat (but successful). One thing I know for sure though, Lisbon (or whichever other city RTP would choose) would be a great host and has been missing for long as far as hosting destination spots are concerned. You'd have to excuse us the show hosts though as the only TV hosts with talent that I can remember haven't worked in front of cameras for long.

If we're really to do a typical entry (more than likely) and since not even the huge improvement that Leonor was last year can save us, then I wouldn't mind sending Ronaldo's sister for the lulz, the hype...and hey...televoting could turn out interesting

I also hope that when broadcasting Ukrainian show of 2017 this year's "expert" will be gone. He was so annoying and out of it so many times that I even thought to myself "Eládio, come back! Lordi won't return to scare you, I promise!" xrofl

Not a fan of goody goody two shoes seminarist Hélder Reis either but at least he kind of goes by unnoticed. Always better than Sílvia Alberto, she seemed to be always high on drugs...(and how I used to like her at the beginning of her career in RTP2..)

The (shockingly) rather successful Portuguese entry in the last time Ukraine hosted Eurovision:

I like the song, but I can't understand how Germany, France and Switzerland gave this 12 and Belgium 10 when hearing and watching this. Sure diaspora is one part, but still, this is on the border of unforgivable (not as 2006 though, which was perhaps worst act ever in ESC-history).

Anyway, I wish you success Portugal, it is about time! xpray

Lol that wont happen. Surely you know how RTP works right? They only put (minimal) work to things that get ratings. Euro 2016 for example, lots of promo for the matches because they know the games get huge ratings. Eurovision? Its a flop.

Anyway the national music scene these days seems to only be about ballads, pop or kizomba. So yeah....

Hope never dies! They've stated a few times already this year that they will remodel our selection process and they even had initial meetings to plan our selection method already, so hopefully this time they've actually learned something and will try something new.

The ratings this year weren't that bad considering we were not even taking part and the promotion was almost none. It was the most watched show of the day for RTP. Plus, they must realize that when we've managed to qualify to the final (2008-2010) ratings for the Eurovision final were amazing, especially in 2008 when people were very hopeful we could reach a very good result.

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

Given the many years of history Eurovision in Portugal is synonym with RTP. Obviously it is not RTP's fault that the artists pool is in average of mediocre quality. However RTP feel a bit "stuck in the past". Any Portuguese person knows that it is not the most watched channel and aside their news I have to confess that there isn't much else I watch on the channel. The people who are assigned to FdC are far from ideal. This includes all of them. Juries, songwriters, presentors, commentators...it is good to hear that something will change but I have wondered about something through the years.

Would it ever be possible for Portuguese private TV networks to join the EBU? Even though I am not a fan of TVI they have been the leading broadcaster for years now and I wonder if anything would change if the power of hosting FdC change to their hands. Or SIC even. The artists that end up at FdC are always one of 3. a) artists with a name in the country but without international projection b) virtually unknown artists and c) artists coming out of talent shows of RTP (ex-The Voice contestants for instance)
As for the songwriters...hate to be anti-nationalistic here now but we need songwriters that aren't Portuguese at least to enhace our chances. It's no shame to admit this, just take a look at the results of countries Azerbaijan, etc.
I know that money is a problem but I wouldn't mind, for example, having a Swedish songwriting team of 3rd tier category within their country. Their 3rd tier songwriters are still better than our best ones.

But back to the private networks. If it would be possible at all for them to be part of EBU perhaps chances could be enhaced. TVI and SIC always seemed better at scouting young talents when it comes to arts than RTP. With this I'm not saying I even like most of them...but you get the feeling that they are more modernized TV stations which attract different kind of viewers. I name TVI purely for their ratings...their talent shows are weak but they do get the ratings at the end of the day. SIC had Idols, no idea how the most recent editions have been but the first ones back in the day were interesting to watch.

All in all, I feel that the future of Portugal in Eurovision could have better chances if the broadcaster was changed, all due respect to RTP and FdC. Even if I happen to be wrong it would still be interesting to see this happening if only to see some change. I'd like bigger visibility of the contest within the country and talents coming from more modernized TV networks.

Not sure if I really have a point in here, it's just frustrating to brainstorm Portugal when allied to Eurovision :( Hey, maybe we should pull a San Marino 2016 (but successful) ;) Wouldn't mind that.

i'm always in favour of supporting domestic talent and i disagree with the notion that some countries need to outsource things to win. being sweden #2 is not doing it for azerbaijan at all since 2014, being the fourth biggest music market in the world has not helped the uk a bit in the last 15 years, etc. i don't think it's impossible to find portuguese talent that will give portugal good results, considering smaller and poorer countries consistently do it

much like the uk, portugal needs first and foremost a change in attitude: rtp needs to believe that eurovision is worth the effort in the long term. with more effort, better results will come (even if sometimes not immediately), and with those, public interest will grow. the method is tried and true, just ask france!

In all honesty, if the mics weren't sounding as horrible and if the camera work wasn't as dodgy in some spots, Amar could have actually done rather decently.

Supporting domestic talent as far as songwriters are concerned has got us nowhere in ages. Outsourcing should be given a chance at least. What do you mean with the Azerbaijan remark? They've been to the final always. Our last final was achieved 6 years ago. So give me Azerbaijaini results over ours any given day.
UK outsources? I am unaware of this. Another reason why should they give it a try.
The thing is that despite those smaller countries having smaller music markets the quality is better because the way people embrace culture and music in those countries is much more positive than the way we do around here. This is a problem of ours that we have for the longest time when it comes to music. There is a lot of ignorance and ESC-friendly scenes simply don't exist. People in the Portuguese music industry look at Eurovision with prejudice, going as far as claiming that "Europe is tasteless", yadda yadda. I don't want these people writing possible entries for my country. I'll have a foreigner over those anyday. You being Brazilian perhaps know what I talk about, the image of Portuguese people isn't the best in Brazil because of among many things there's the fact that we seem to be a country that refuses to keep up with times, instead people seem to prefer to be proud and refuse to step up, evolve.

I don't envision RTP brining change anytime soon. France and their great and very diverse music scene is simply from another league.

If even with our best effort in many years (Leonor last year) we didn't make it, I don't think there's other solution. Outsource, I say! xbored

That's because in Portugal they always invite the same songwriters! Probably there are lots of good unknown songwriters who can't even "enter the market" because the same songwriters are invited everytime and they don't give any chance to new faces! And outsourcing was already given a chance with Andrej Babic and also with some Swedish names at least once (Filipa Ruas in 2011 with "Tensão"). Yes, Andrej Babic gave us the masterpiece "Senhora do Mar" and could have given us also Catarina Pereira with her two attempts (if there was only televote she would have won insted of Filipa and Suzy in their respective years). But even in those situations Babic worked with Carlos Coelho (a Portuguese composer). So you can't attribute all the merit only to Babic. It's not like you had a team composed only by foreign composers like in Azerbaijan.

In my point of view the issue is not the nationality of the composers. The issue is how RTP is closed to new names (even Portuguese names) and freedom of music (when they request you to sing only in Portuguese or even to follow a certain theme like "fado" - even if it's just to make you throw a random sentence in the middle of your song using the word "fado" as "destiny" instead of the music style).

Being the most watched on RTP doesn't mean anything, ts always the most watched of the day cause its exhibited during the prime time hours. The ratings are still awful, and it loses to the other channels, regularly missing the top10 most watched shows of the day.
I dont believe in RTP's intentions to change, at all. They need to prove it to me, enough promises.
