Re: LITHUANIA 2016
Opinion piece by a young ESC fan who hits most of the points we've been talking about here:

"4th and 6th places respectively went to Belgium and our Latvian neighbors. I'll stop here. These two countries provided an alternative in Eurovision - the songs Rhythm Inside and Love Injected do not fit the usual Eurovision standards, and breaking these standards is the only chance for Lithuania to cross the barrier into the top 10."
(He then talks about the success of humorous entries like Finland and Lithuania 2006, which I don't think is exactly relevant, as Eurovision functions so differently now than it did then, but oh well)
"Unfortunately, the impression is that LRT is making every effort to ensure that this doesn't happen. The selection system brings to mind some kind of reality show in which the lesser evil is selected from the heap of performers, and then the least bad song is chosen for the least bad performer. I liked this quote from one of the selection's producers, which went something like this: 'Maybe it's like the selection of athletes for the Olympics? At first, we select an athlete, then decide which sport they'll compete in.'"
"The Lithuanian national selection has such a poor reputation that no performer capable of bringing Lithuania to the top 10 will want to get involved. Participating simply isn't a goal for them, and even if they came to the selection, they would be shot down by the jury and called too alternative and unsuitable for Eurovision. This means that the only chance of choosing somebody who could place higher than the middle would be to elect a representative [in a closed selection.]" (He explains how internal selection works for the readers.)
"It's time for LRT to forget all the Pilvelytės and Mias (nothing against these performers, they're just not suitable for Eurovision,) search Youtube for young, talented, alternative performers, and offer them the opportunity to represent Lithuania in the largest song contest in Europe."
I know Latvia and Belgium certainly didn't choose their entries by searching out underground artists this year, which is something he misses in the article, but I agree that at this point, LRT has not created an atmosphere where most independent artists would feel welcome or appreciated in their NFs, and internal selection would be the only way to quickly break that cycle.
