Anyone else feel there's a hole missing for a real fun, loud uptempo entry this year? Either dance or high-energy rock, the latter is of course missing entirely this year (probably due to the poor success rock entries had last year) but either way, i'm just left wanting for something to fill a certain fun quota that you just expect every year, but no country has delivered.
I'm talking the likes of "Golden Boy", "No Prejudice", "Space", "What's the Pressure", "Beauty Never Lies" and even "Toy" too, i guess. Maybe Netta is the reason nobody wanted to go for a similar tune, and we have a year full of introvert, mumbled ballads and slugging mid-tempo radio pop.
Spain is as uptempo as it gets, but it's just a bit "too spanish", too specific for its audience and feels more like a joke entry that was accidentally selected than a real effort, even if it's a pretty good one, and there's also a bitter political subtext that puts it further off.
San Marino is a fun party song, but it's a bit too relaxed and kind of makes you want to stop to listen to the lyrics and awe in the glory of Serhat rather than just go bananas. Czechia is similar, more goofy and cheeky than really floor-filling.
Finland, Estonia and Norway all bring Eurodance--like tunes that feel more like a warmup than a real freakout, as much as i love Norway, i think the dramatic and mystical quality invites listening more than dancing.
Cyprus, Malta and Switzerland feel too stylish and heavily choreographed - the song itself that is - and seems to aim to impress rather than invite the masses to dance. Belarus is the same, but just bad.
Finally, Australia goes for "fun" i guess, but not in a danceable way, and while Iceland is technically supposed to be danceable, it's just too weird to be THE party anthem of 2019, i guess. Even Portugal has a kind of stimulating rhythm for some parts, but anyway....
Anyone else feel a certain kind of LOSS from having no real obvious party anthem this year? I guess Norway and San Marino is what we'll go with... they will have to do!
