Could San Marino's success set a precedent for other microstates?

San Marino, if there's any justice in the world, should qualify for the final next week. If they do, that's a remarkable achievement for a country of just 30,000 residents. Would that success be enough to lure some of the other microstates back, and possibly a debut for Liechtenstein? Luxembourg have been absent since 1993, Monaco since 2007 and Andorra since 2010. San Marino, Monaco and Andorra have never qualified for the final in the semi-final era, so you could argue that microstates are at a disadvantage in ESC due to a lack of singers, financial problems and international recognition (could your average joe even find Monaco or San Marino on a map?). If San Marino do qualify, it will be a victory for the microstates, and having seen one of their own smash the glass ceiling, the rest could be tempted back. I suspect all Andorran, Monegasque, Luxembourger and Liechtensteiner eyes will be on those envelopes next Thursday night, hoping one of their own does something incredible....

Maybe Monaco's position might change if San Marino qualifies. Andorra, I think, will return eventually, because they seem to be very keen on participating and just don't have the money for it. Liechtenstein will also participate eventually, regardless of San Marino's results.

I don't think Luxembourg can be compared with the other three though. It's quite a bit bigger, and it has a much longer history in the ESC. I don't think their decision would change much if San Marino qualifies.

I'm cheer for every year. They send good songs (except 2012). The country grows every year, so I think that they qualify.

Qualifying is a success nowadays, especially for such a small country. Very true, San Marino might not qualify, but I think they can and this is their best chance ever to do so (and any microstate's best chance to qualify since Andorra's 2007 entry which came 12th in it's semi).

Monaco came 24th (out of 25) in the semi final of 2005, just for the record.

They are. They were planning to withdraw from it, but they ended up not doing it.

I strongly believe that if San Marino will qualify and if also will take a good place in the final, we have many chances to see back to the contest Andorra & Monaco and maybe the debut of Liechtenstein! But I don't think that Luxembourg will come back soon, and especially in 2014!

I do hope San Marino gets a top 10 this year. They have a very beautiful song and IMO i would love to see Valentina bitch slap everyone (inclunding me. i hated "the social network song" and i really felt it didnt had anything to do with her. this time i feel we are going to see the real Valentina on stage). with that in mind, i think there's a chance we see Andorra next year. Monaco? Not so much. And correct me if i'm wrong but with Lichtenstein it's just a matter of EBU accepting them.

I don't remember Monaco being a huge favourite back then - if they were, they certainly weren't as favoured as San Marino are this year!

In theory it can bring back smaller countries, but are they still broadcasting it? If not, interest would be very low, and it won't help matters that much!

No, Monaco wasn't a favorite in 2005. It was at the last places in bets!

This year San Marino have a song which I feel is one of the best in the second semi-final. San Marino is therefore on my list of countries I most want to qualify this evening. It will be great to see San Marino in the final for the first time ever.
