The Gymkhana Drift Cup presents the drifting competition during the City Challenge event in Baku. Eight heroes driving a BMW, Nissan or Audi will battle against each other, trying to take the crown home. The art is to perform perfect drifts around the two-kilometre track.

Gymkhana, pronounced Jimkäinah, is the Greek word for “athletic skills competition”. And this is what Gymkhana is all about: the drivers’ skills. Complete control over the vehicle is the key to success.

The scoring zone begins at the start-finish line and ends at the Marriott Hotel. In qualifying, judges carefully note how the drifter enters the scoring zone and in what style and angle the drift is performed.

On Sunday, the eight drivers compete in a “shootout” race. The best driver in qualifying battles against number eight, the runner-up against number seven, etc. The two rivals drive simultaneously and run the course twice. Three judges award points to the drivers, with a maximum of ten points per judge. The driver with the highest points score wins the battle and continues in
the knock-out competition until the big final when the two best drivers drift towards gold and silver.(gm)
