2016-2018: big success (2nd, 4th, 12th being fan favourite)
2019: retired
2021: back with kind of success
2022: fail
2023-2024: retired

this is weird

Bulgaria is a fickle friend, You never know when they will turn up and then BAM! They're back again!

Oh that's a real shame! What's the issue? Lack of funding or so?

If they find a sponsor, maybe. Otherwise I don't think BNT can afford Eurovision.
That's literally how it goes since 2018. The reason we missed some editions like this year and 2019 is because at that point no third party was interested to pay for everything.

Interesting... If Bulgaria had won back in 2017, would they have been able to host in 2018? It is a shame, they were about to get their first victory for sure.

I see no reason we wouldn't have host it, in 2017 there was a different BNT head. Also in 2018 it was Bulgaria's turn to host the EU Presidency of the Council so i imagine the government would've use ESC to further promote its "extra hospitality skills".
Afterwards everything went downhill with the current BNT head Emil Koshlukov who is so incompetent that no one can say how he got here and how is he still here. The good news is there's a high chance he's getting kicked out in the coming months.

Bulgaria actually hosted the Junior in 2015 after Italy's win in 2014, so I think they would have hosted it...

Bulgaria needs some fans with time on their hands and explore what the issue is and find solutions. Sure some crowd funding would help them out. If a sponsor is needed, knock on the doors of every big company operating in the country. Get in touch with the music scene to find suitable performers, composers and stage producers.

Bulgaria has an OGAE club, are they doing anything?

BNT should simply allow Chalga, Payner is probably the richest label in Bulgaria and I could see them jump on it but since there's this bias it won't happen...

Although I think the golden days for Chalga is slightly over, but still I could see it being a televoting success in Eurovision if the right producer and artist would be picked...

I wish another broadcaster took over Eurovision, because there are channels that can afford Eurovision, just not BNT.

NOVA TV thrives with reality competitions and the biggest channel Btv has been trying out reality competitions as well successfully, so the target demo is there. I wish they showed interest in EBU.

I always wondered what so stubbornly prompt some broadcasters that seem not to be interested to take part, like in this case BNT, still not allow the rights to some other broadcaster (obviously it also requires the other to be or become EBU members). It's almost like that annoying grumpy person at a party that makes damn sure that if he/she is grumpy, no one else can enjoy the party either, instead of just leaving it and go home.

It's difficult to imagine Bulgaria sending chalga as long as we have the so-called 'elite' selection juries.
They will probably find chalga trash and cheap, while a Celtic ballad high quality.

Otherwise Eurovision in Sunny Beach would be such a delight xheat

Well, we all know the BNT Eurovision Twitter account is a bit erratic, but it was an (un?)expected masterclass of weirdness on the 15th of September > https://twitter.com/bg_eurovision/with_replies?lang=fr

The different answers throughout the day about a possible participation: no, never, no way, we can't say anything, troll post about Google searches, no, we can't say anything.

And, at last, their last answer on the matter:

PS: no, no way, no, never, I'd say X instead of Twitter.

Given the quality of their recent entries, let's just hope their absence from the contest derives from the lack of sponsoring/money instead of the lack of interest or being bitter about a few rainbow flags or seeing one of 40 countries win which is not spelled Bulgaria.
