Estonian national broadcaster Eesti Rahvusringhääling (ERR) has confirmed that Estonia’s national selection Eesti Laul 2014 will be held on March 1 of next year, with the same format as the previous year’s contest.
“The competition provides the opportunity for all artists to introduce their work to a wider audience,” said Heidy Purga, producer of Eesti Laul, to ERR. Indeed, each year, Eesti Laul brings out both fresh and familiar faces from Estonia’s music scene. Notable contestants from past years include Ott Lepland, who took home 6th place in the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with “Kuula”, as well as Estonian Idol Birgit Õigemeel, who reached 20th place in the 2013 Eurovision final with “Et uus saaks alguse”. Another contestant that made a huge buzz last year was alternative punk band Winny Puhh, whose harsh vocals and bizaare costumes for the song “Meiecundimees üks Korsakov läks eile Lätti” brought them to a Rick Owens fashion show in Paris earlier this year.
The deadline for musical compositions will be December 9. The Top 20 entries will be selected by a jury, to be announced no later than December 13. Eesti Laul 2014 will have two semifinals, one on February 14, and the other on February 21. The grand final will take place on 1 March 2014, of which the winner will be chosen to represent Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen.
