Elitsa & Stoyan who represented Bulgaria in 2007, bringing home the best countries result to date, are once again flying the flag for their country. Three songs will be performed live in a National Final on March 3rd with a 5 panel jury and the televoters choosing the song together.
After the official announcement, ESC UNITED contacted a few people who met the two artists in Helsinki 6 years ago to share their thoughts and memories with us.
Morten Thomassen, president of OGAE Norway remembers:
“I loved the song. It is the best placed Bulgarian entry ever. Last year Bulgarian TV had a survey between fans what kind of song they wanted and the result was they wanted something ethnic. And this group being ethnic and their best result made them choose them again. I am happy. I had a nice chat with both Elitsa and Stoyan during the Eurovision rehearsals and also spoke to them a the welcome party of the mayor of Helsinki. I noticed the song will be selected and hopefully they will pick a similar song to ‘Water’. “
Roy van der Merwe, president of OGAE Rest of the World remember:
“I did meet up with Elitsa and Stoyan in Helsinki in 2007. My interest lies in composers and not performers but they were also the composers of ‘Water’ and for that reason I spoke to them. Both wrote the music and Elitsa wrote the lyrics. They gave a beautiful promo CD single out with a DVD as well. I had them sign my copy. The song was not my cup of tea but I am always in favor of songs in other languages than English.”
Nelus Fereiira, Business Executive and Manager of several South African artists
“While doing a shift at the fan stand and Elisa and Stoyan came pass. I was so surprised at how tiny she was. I could hardly believe that such a powerful voice could come from such a small person.
What impressed me most about their performance was the the precision and the passion that they both showed when playing the drums.”

It is always nice to see people returning to EUROVISION – someone like Udo Jurgens triede three times in a row and then won. It, however, also can backfire, like with LENA – after winning, the next year it was only 10th place. Luckily with these two, there are a gap of several years and hopefully they can push BULGARIA into the finals again.

I’m sort of excited. I’ve been a fan of most of the Bulgarian songs, and “Water” is probably one of the best, but I’m just hoping it’s not a rehash of “Water.” In other words, I don’t want it to be like Lady Gaga branding “Judas” a brand new song when it was way too similar to “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face.” I think the National Selection will help them write three completely different songs and give us a good entry from Bulgaria. I’d LOVE to see Bulgaria make it to the finals!
