We’re excited that our next interview with the up-and-coming young artist DEIONA is ready for you! Learn more about how DEIONA balances high school and a singing career, and who she’d love to collaborate with on a new single below.
Welcome to ESCUnited.com for an interview DEIONA! How are you doing today?
Hi, ESCUnited and thank you for having me! I’m doing very well, a little bit tired because of the many rehearsals, but I’m not complaining, I’m very happy. DEIONA Interview: “We’ve created many songs, but none of them were good enough for the national selection.”
We’re going to kick this off with some questions to help our readers get to know you better – how old were you when you first realized your talent for singing, and when did that talent turn into a potential career opportunity?
I was five years old when I started singing, but I’ve realized that this could be my future career recently, when I sang in front of a large public and I felt the power that a singer has on the stage, the power of making people happy.
If you had the opportunity to collaborate with any former Eurovision artist on a new song, who would you pick to work with and why?
I really love Rosa Linn and her Eurovision song “Snap” from last year. I think we have the same singing style, so I would choose her if I had to collaborate with any Eurovision artist.
When you’re not recording or performing music, what do you do in your spare time?
Because I’m still in high school, I try to manage my time so I can still do music, study and relax. There are times when I just want to stay in bed and sleep and there are times when I want to hang out with my friends and family.
TVR announced the participating artists on December 29th, but of course you received the news well before that. What was your reaction when you learned you’d be selected for the national final?
I was woken by a call from my manager and he kept me in suspense. At first, he seemed very sad and quite disappointed, but then he told me that he sent me a screenshot of the email he received. When I saw the answer I immediately started crying, because this has been my dream since I was a little kid.
Was your song “Call on Me” written specifically with the Romanian national final in mind, or is this a case of right time, right song that determined your participation?
In the last couple of months we’ve created many songs, but none of them were good enough for the national selection. We chose one of the songs and improved it with some additional elements that were needed. But all of these didn’t happen in one or two weeks, it was a long process that ended up with a good result.
On January 16th you released the official music video for “Call On Me”, set in a theater and full of red imagery. When you look back at the recording experience, what was your favorite piece or scene to film?
I don’t really have a favorite scene of the music video, because I enjoyed the whole experience, but when I shot the scenes with the dancers I had a different vibe, because they gave me some of their energy. Somehow they changed the rhythmic of the song, from a pop ballad to a more dynamic song.
And speaking of energy, you’re set to open the Selecția Națională final on February 11th. What tease can our readers expect as to what we’ll see from you on stage?
I can’t give you many details of the show, because I want to surprise you in many ways. It’ll be very intense, sensitive and magical. But in first place, I want people to feel my emotion and the sweet message of the song.
For those who want to connect with you ahead of or after the selection– where can they find you and your music?
If you enjoyed my first single “Call on me” you can find it on all streaming platforms and you can follow me on social media apps Instagram, Facebook and TikTok by the username @deionaofficial. I promise you lots of surprises and new music after this national selection, which is just the beginning for me.
In closing, do you have a final message you’d like to share with the readers of ESCUnited?
I hope you enjoyed the song and the sensitive message of it. If you did, I’m relying on you on February 11th to vote for me to be the representative of Romania. And don’t forget to love your loved ones and to let yourself be loved. Love can change everything.
DEIONA will compete first during Selecția Națională 2023, the Romanian national selection show that will select the country’s next representative and entry for Eurovision 2023. The show’s winner will be decided by a 100% televote process in comparison to prior years.
