Putting an end to all speculations, Cyprus has finally confirmed their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015! The Cypriot broadcaster CyBC published a detailed document regarding their plans for next year’s competition – and it looks like the Mediterranean island will have their biggest selection process ever!
How will the Cypriot entry be chosen?
The voting process will be reminiscent of the Swedish Melodifestivalen. There will be an unspecified number of televised semi finals with the winner of each show proceeding to the grand final and the runner-up having to go through a second chance round. Two additional songs will complete the final by qualifying from the second chance show. Each round of voting will consist of 50% televoting and 50% jury decision.
Have the dates of the shows been announced?
No, CyBC haven’t yet announced the exact dates.
Who will be able to take part in the Cypriot national final?
The selection process is open. Submissions can be sent to cypruseurovision2015@cybc.com.cy
or by mail to the Cypriot broadcaster. At least one person in the creative team (composers, lyricists, etc.) has to be from Cyprus or of Cypriot origin.
Cyprus joined the Eurovision family in 1981. Since then they have managed to bring in three 5th places in 1982, 1997 and 2004. This year the island decided to withdraw due to budget restrictions. Their 2013 entry An Me Thimase performed by Despina Olympiou failed to qualify for the grand final.
