Yep, you read that correctly: AUSTRALIA WILL COMPETE IN EUROVISION 2015!

The Eurovision fandom was already surprised by Czech Republic’s return to the contest – but for the 60th anniversary the EBU and ORF have come up with something really special. After being invited as interval act last year, Australia will join the contest as a proper competitor.

The Reference Group and the EBU’s Television Committee officially accepted the proposal. According to the EBU this is a one-off initiative – Australia won’t be a regular participant from now on.

How will that work out?

Australia won’t have to go through a semi final. They will be directly qualified to the final just like the Big 5 and the host country. They will be allowed to vote in both semis and the final. It is still being decided whether they will use jury voting only or also organise a televote.

What happens if Australia wins?

If they win, the contest will NOT be held in Australia. Instead, an EBU broadcaster would be chosen to co-host Eurovision together with SBS in a European city
