Time to wake from the off-season slumber, people! Belgian broadcaster RTBF may be revealing their hopeful entrant soon, giving us the first nugget of information for the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest.
Radio station Vivacité (owned by RTBF) has announced that the Belgian entrant will be revealed on Wednesday, 15 September, during “8/9“, the morning show of Cyril Detaeye, on RTBF’s primary channel La Une.
Currently, there is no concrete information on the identity of the Belgian representative. A few sources have speculated that it will be Jérémie Makiese, the latest winner of La Voix Belgique, who expressed interest in doing Eurovision after the 2021 contest ended. We will know for certain in five days.
In recent years, Belgium has traditionally been among the first countries to announce their representatives, starting with Blanche’s early reveal in back in 2017. The country, which alternates between Flemish and French-speaking broadcasters every year, has had mixed successes at Eurovision, though RTBF’s efforts have been more fruitful than VRT’s. Belgium’s only victory –“J’aime la vie” by Sandra Kim – came from the Walloon broadcaster’s entrant. RTBF’s latest entrant, Eliot, failed to reach the finale in Tel Aviv.
Last year’s representatives, the famed trip-hop band Hooverphonic, managed to break Belgium’s two year non-qualification streak with their song ‘The Wrong Place”. Belgium ultimately finished 19th and the Grand Final in Rotterdam. The upcoming 2022 contest will be hosted in Italy.
