Eurovision 250 2020 List

As is tradition for New Years Eve, fans counted down to the new year with the top 250 Eurovision songs of all time. Voting opened earlier this winter, where fans could submit their top 10 songs and award them 1-8, 10, and 12 points Eurovision style. ESCRadio and Songfestival.be then worked together to tally the point totals and played each song from number 250 to number 1 throughout the day.

It should come as no suprise to Eurovision fans, but Loreen has won the ESC250 for the ninth year in a row! This means she has been crowned the most popular Eurovision entry in modern history despite winning the contest 8 years ago in Baku, Azerbaijan. Not even the 2020 fan favorites could compete with the Eurovision queen.

A Statistical Analysis for the ESC250 this year

Numerous fan favorites made their traditional appearance in the line up like Ukraine’s 2007 entry “Dancing Lasha Tumbai” by Verka Serduchka, Estonia’s 2017 entry “Verona” by Koit Toome & Laura, Portugal’s 2019 entry “Telemóveis” by Conan Osiris, Finland’s 2017 entry “Blackbird” by Norma John, and Ukraine’s 2009 entry “Shady Lady” by Ani Lorak. KEiiNO’s 2019 hit “Spirit in the Sky” from Norway was also present on the list which shocked no one and it held up it’s top ten finish from last year.

Numerous winners were also featured on the list – the lowest ranking winner being 1975’s winner Teach-In which earned spot 249 this year (an 11 place change from 2019). Out of all 67 winners, only 23 of them appeared on the list before the top 50 songs were announced. Lena’s 2010 winning song “Satellite” was the last winner to appear outside the top 50 – it was announced as number 51 which is the same place it came in last year.

At the end of the night, 37 Eurovision winning songs were ranked in the top 250 this year – the exact same number as last year. However, this year Dima Bilan was not able to make the 2020 cut and is the only winner to not appear on both lists. Despite him falling off the list, another winner appeared to take his spot – “Ding-A-Dong” by Teach-In.

While songs from all across the Eurovision catalog were featured, some years were not represented on the list at all. These years were: 1956, 1957, 1959-1962, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1978, 1980, 1989, and 2002. None of these years appeared on the 2019 list either. The oldest entry to be featured was Italy’s 1958 entry “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu” by Domenico Modugno – which placed 3rd in the contest.

The 2020 entries received a lot of love this year, with 20 songs being represented in the top 250 list. The highest ranking song outside of the top 50 was Azerbaijan’s entry “Cleopatra” featuring Efendi, which came in at number 75. Within the top 50 fans were shocked that Daði & Gagnamagnið’s 2020 hit “Think About Things” was not the highest placing song, that honor went to Diodato and “Fai Rumore” which was number 9 overall.

Sadly the 2019 songs did not fair as well as they did last year. Only 20 songs appeared on list compared to the 25 from last year. The highest ranking song from 2019 was the winning entry “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence, which came in at number 3.

33 new songs appeared this year that were not in the 2019 250 lineup and 71 songs from Eurovision 1956-1999 were featured in this year’s line up as well – a slight change from the 66 songs that were present in the 2019 line-up for the same time period. Perhaps we have #EurovisionAgain to thank for that trend?

The biggest change came from Turkey’s 1988 entry by MFÖ – “Sufi” – which rose over 947 slots. That could potentially be one of the largest jumps in the history of the event! The largest fall came from Sweden’s 2019 entry “Too Late for Love” by John Lundvik which fell 111 spots this year.

The most popular Eurovision year after 2019 and 2020 was the 2018 contest in Lisbon, Portugal – 19 songs from that year appeared in the final list. The 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine was the next most popular contest featuring 14 Eurovision entries.
