Needless to say but not everyone in the world is thrilled with a victory of a bearded woman, especially not in Russia. Austria who won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the bearded Drag Queen Conchita Wurst and her anthem “Rise like a Phoenix” on Saturday upset several Russian Lawmakers. The socially conservative politicians are eager to break away from the current contest and start its own installment.

Communist Party deputy Valery Rashkin:” The last Eurovision contest’s results exhausted our patience. We must leave this competition. We cannot tolerate this endless madness”

The new concept would introduce a  “Voice of Eurasia” approach that would include countries from the former Soviet Union only. That proposal was immediately embraced by advisers to Belarus President Aleksander Lukashenko. :“Conchita Wurst’s Eurovision victory symbolises the complete collapse of the European Union’s moral values. We don’t need Europe”. To this date, Belarus is considered by most political experts as the only remaining dictatorship in Europe.

One of The authors of the legislation went even as far as making a proposal barring Conchita Wurst to enter Russia.

Wurst’s victory has also spawned an online protest campaign in which Russian men post pictures of themselves shaving on various social networks.

Russia was booed when they received 12 points as well as when they qualified from the Semi Finals. This  unfortunately only adds to the political climate that has been hovering over the contest due to Russia’s takeover of Crimea that was (or is) part of Ukraine. Votes that came from that peninsula were counted as Ukrainian votes this year.

It is early to say whether or not Russia will actually act on this but it is expected that this conversation will continue over the next few months.

What are your thoughts on this, should we be even paying attention to this threats or is this a legitimate sign of some countries withdrawing? Share your thoughts below and join us (no pun intended) HERE and talk to hundreds of Eurovision fans.

We will share our thoughts in more detail soon as well. We are still in recovery mode from last week.
