Today our editor David had the opportunity to sit down with guitarist Valentyn and drummer Fedir of Ziferblat, who will be representing Ukraine at Eurovision this year with the song “Bird of Pray”.

Together they discuss the process of getting to Eurovision, which was the culmination of three years of hard work and trial and error. As they prepared for their entrance for this year, they felt like they had unfinished business to complete which catapulted them onto the massive Basel stage.

They also revealed to David that this year they actually created a number of songs for Vidbir 2025, which are included on the band’s recently released album “Of Us”. The first song they wrote for the selection was the title track for the album “Of Us” which is has a very indie rock tone but is fully in English, and “Victoria” a beautiful rock ballad. Also appearing on this album is their Vidbir 2024 entry “Place I Call Home”. Ultimately the decision to submit “Bird of Prey” came down to Fedir – who predicted their eventual win.

The band also discusses that their costumes for Basel were created by a stylist who has also worked with Eurovision winners – Jamala (Eurovision 2016) and Maneskin (Eurovision 2021). This has been a dream collaboration for them as they’ve been wanting to find a way to work together – Eurovision 2025 seemed to be the perfect time.

And finally their discussion closed discussing the pressure and honor they are experiencing representing Ukraine at this time following a long streak of qualifications. But also in the aftermath of a missile strike that struck the flat of the band’s backing singer just yesterday. They state “it is hard to concentrate, but this is the biggest pressure. But that is why we are here because we need to remind Europeans about the war. Believe me we don’t want to remind anyone, we don’t want to always talk about the war, but what can we do?”
