It’s Portugal calling, fellow Eurovision fans! In a post on the channel’s Facebook page, RTP confirmed the country’s participation at Eurovision Song Contest 2024 and announced Festival da Canção as the selection mechanism for their entry.
Submission open in Portugal
The 58th edition of Festival da Canção will once again have 20 songs competing, 14 of which will come from an invitation by RTP to singers and songwriters from various musical genres. The remaining six entries will be chosen from an open submission window.
In each semi-final, 10 songs will be competing and 6 songs will qualify for the Grand Final. In each semi-final, there will be a first round of vote responsible to select 5 songs, based on the results of the public and jury votes (consisting of personalities linked to the world of music, entertainment and media), in a 50/50 proportion. In the event of a tie for 5th place, the song with the highest score in the jury’s vote will qualify to the Grand Final. Later, a sixth song will be exclusively selected through the public vote. The song with the highest number of calls in this second voting period, in each semi-final, will qualify for the Grand Final.
In the Grand Final, voting will be done by televoting and through the vote of a regional jury, made up of representatives of the 5 regions of mainland Portugal and the 2 autonomous regions (Madeira and Azores), in a 50/50 proportion. In the event of a tie for 1st place, the song with the highest number of calls in the televoting will win.
RTP has published the rulebook for the 58th edition, which can be accessed here.
The 68th Eurovision Song Contest will be held on May 7, 9 and 11, 2024 in the Swedish city of Malmö, in Malmö Arena, with the capacity of a little over 15,000 spectators and it is the second largest arena in Sweden. It was open in 2008 and has already hosted the 2013 contest.
