Estonian broadcaster ERR has announced changes to the both the format and personnel of its national selection, Eesti Laul.
Chief producer Tomi Rahula stepped down from his role after five years. Under his leadership, the contest adapted to COVID-19 challenges, introduced quarter-finals, hosted semi-finals in other cities outside of Tallinn instead of in a TV studio, and introduced Estonian artists to leading music professionals from around the world via the grand final’s international jury vote.
Along with leadership changes, ERR promised format changes in the show, but hasn’t shared specifics yet.
ERR Chief Editor of Entertainment Programs Karmel Killandi said the broadcaster will share detailed plans in a few months.
“Our biggest wish is to offer the best platform for Estonian musicians, and experiences for viewers,” Killandi said in Estonian in an ERR announcement. “I hope that artists and songwriters have already started writing new songs for the competition.”
The last two years have marked the start of a successful streak for Estonia. In 2022, Stefan placed 13th with his country pop hit “Hope,” and last year, Alika placed eighth with Bridges, a piano ballad that showcased her powerhouse vocals.
