This morning it was confirmed by SVT that the municipality of Örnsköldsvik had submitted a bid to host the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. They are the third bid to be confirmed alongside previous host locations Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Their intended host venue will be the Hägglunds Arena, which has hosted a number of heats during the 2007, 2010, 2014, and 2018 editions of Melodifestivalen. The municipality also highlighted that the Hägglunds Arena was most recently used to host the semi-final round of Melodifestivalen 2023. The very same arena was proposed in their bid to host Eurovision 2016, ultimately losing out to the Globe Arena in Stockholm.

The arena has an overall capacity of 9,880 spectators when set in a concert setting, making it the smallest venue in the running so far. The municipality has also stated they would dock a number of cruise ships in the harbor in order to accommodate the thousands of visitors who would come for the event. Their release also states that the city is aiming for a sustainable and climate-neutral contest.

SVT has indicated that it is now in talks with “several interested municipalities” to host the song contest, so additional bids may surface in the coming days.
