It’s official: Iceland will be participating in next year’s edition of the Eurovision Song Contest somewhere in Sweden! The announcement was made as part of a press release from RÚV on 30 May.
We also learned about how Iceland will be choosing their song, and it will be through their national final process, Söngvakeppnin. Songs can be submitted starting 15 June with no clear deadline at this time.
While this year’s entrant, Diljá with the song “Power” failed to qualify out of the second semifinal, Iceland is still a proud supporter of the contest. 69% of the nation watched the second semifinal and even more watched the final with a 73% viewership. That was possibly because of Daði Freyr, part of Iceland’s 2021 act, taking the stage live at Eurovision for the first time as part of an interval act.
This will be Iceland’s 36th participation in the contest after debuting in 1986. The nation has yet to win, with their best placement being 2nd in 1999 and 2009.
