RTVE has announced that the Spanish Broadcaster has received 876 songs ahead of next year’s Benidorm Fest 2023. The same contest that gave us Chanel and her song Slo-Mo must now whittle down the extensive list to sixteen songs that will participate in the two semifinals, early next year.

The songs have been flowing into the RTVE headquarters in Madrid from the open submission period on September 1st, 2022. Songs were still being submitted up until the last day. Still, the contest, overall, received ten fewer songs than the year prior despite Chanel’s historic placement for Spain.

RTVE has subtly indicated that, despite fewer songs, the quality might be higher as more professional music labels submitted entries as compared to the year prior.

The selection process will consist of sixteen songs making the final cut for the national selection.  Benidorm Fest 2023 will take place from January 29 until February 4.  These are the dates of the main events of the Spanish national selection:

  • January 29, 2023  Opening Ceremony
  • January 31, 2023 First Semi-final
  • February 2, 2023  Second Semi-final
  •  February 4, 2023 Grand Final

The final result will be determined by the combination of a 50/50 televoting and public vote.  The jury vote will include national and international professionals.  On the other hand, the public vote is split into two groups: 25% demoscopic and 25% televote similar to last year’s edition.
