Azerbaijan remains the only country who participated last year, but has not announced whether they will compete in Yerevan. Among the 2021 participating countries, only Germany has announced it’s withdrawal from the competition, while Russia has been forced removed completely.

The long wait is also not surprising, considering the history between Armenia & Azerbaijan, who just less than two years ago were in a direct war with each other. Viewers are still eager to learn, whether Azerbaijan will stand by what they’ve promised, or whether the complicated history of the two countries will once again, have the final word on the outcome.

At the start of the year, member of the Azerbaijani delegation, Eldar Rasulov stated “the country must participate regardless where the contest is held“.

Just recently however, a vague statement by a delegation member was revealed, which stated “There is no decision on this yet, so it is impossible to say whether Azerbaijan will participate in the children’s Eurovision song contest to be held in Armenia“.

Azerbaijan in Junior Eurovision

Azerbaijan has only participated in the contest 4 times since their debut in 2012, receiving mixed results throughout their participation record. To date their best result came last year with Sona Azizova’s power ballad “One of those Days”, which ended in 5th place overall with 151 points. Their worst placement was in 2018 when Fidan Huseynova came 16th out of 20 entries in Minsk, Belarus.

The 20th edition of the Junior Contest will be held on the 11th of December 2022, so İTV will likely reveal their plans for the contest soon.
