Every year our “Expert” Panel comes together to judge all entries for the Eurovision Song Contest and they’re back to take apart the 2013 entries and rank them accordingly. While their characters and comments may be wacky, the scores are dead serious. All 13 panelists will comment on the song and rank them accordingly giving it points using a scale from five to zero. At the end you’ll also get to cast your vote in the poll. If you would learn more about the panelists and to discuss the show, join us on our Forum HERE

Let’s have a look at the current scoreboard:

ZZZRanking

Zlata Ognevich won the golden ticket to Malmo when she won the National Final this past December with the song “Gravity”. She already tried to represent Ukraine twice before (2010 & 2011) and three’s a charm as they say. Let’s find out if it was worth the wait, here are the panel’s comments and scores:

Barb E DahlA beautiful melody with a great hook performed by a gorgeous beautiful singer. It’s rare that a song can transform you and take you to a place for three minutes and Ukraine was able to achieve this with “Gravity”.  The orchestration is phenomenal and the detailed vocal arrangements are superior to any of the other entries that I had the pleasure to listen to this year.  See, you didn’t think I can write something smart? Well it looks like you misunderstimated me and I’m a lot smarterer than you think.

Alex ChandhokZlata has a strong ballad. Although a ballad, It is more a mid-tempo, uplifting style of song, which means people are more likely to pay quick attention. This song has gone through a lot of changes, consulting fans on the process. Did it work? For the most part. Strong drum and keyboard use help, along with distinctive backing singers. The big problem is the ending. The song is building to a big crescendo, but just stop suddenly. Major anti-climax. Zlata is a wonderful singer and this will sound great live. No doubt Ukraine are back on track in the rankings.

King Valentino XVIIZlata undoubtedly has one of the strongest voices of the yeear. She gives a powerful vocal that effortlessly glides over the wonderfulla weird chord progressions of the music. It is indeed the chord progression that sets this song apart. It goes to totally bizarre, unexpected places beyond when I was when. The production of the song however lets it down. It’s too clean and sparkly. At times it feels like something from a disney movie. I ate Donald Duck. Never the less, this is very good.

Scotty Too HottyGet me a plane ticket to Ukraine now! She’s a stunner isn’t she?! It’s a catchy song and if she can sing well on the night, there’s no reason why this won’t go top 10! The only downside to this, is the endin gbecause there’s a definite climax and I thought they could have wowed everyone with an explosive ending but it lacks something. Maybe she can give me an explosive ending in private?

Eau d'yre LizzyLiz: Oh, we have a huge favorite here. It’s the Ukrainian entry. Doesn’t the music remind you of our safari trip in Africa two years ago, Eau?
Eau: Yes, I do remember. Instead of approaching us when I opened my window wide open, the tigers just left quietly. I’m still puzzled by it….As always I was smiling very friendly, but the tigers just left!
Liz: Somehow this song sparks vague memories of France’s entry last year . I mean there’s so much happening in this song. The various chords… (to be continued)

Emma MagnusonI didn’t know Zlatan Ibrahimovic was going to be in this year’s ESC! Oh sorry, that’s Zlata. Is this the soundtrack of the new Disney Movie, coming soon at the cinemas? Well, not bad, but not great either. This lady is very beautiful, and so does her voice, but her song is not as good as her in my opinion. And it’s like you wait for a climax but never comes, and then it suddenly ends! She could do much better

Dark MasterThere goes the soundtrack of the new Disney cartoon. I am disappointed, because if it was meant to be performed for someone, it should be for the 8th part of Harry Potter. However, it is well produced, she sings well and the backing vocalists sound good. The problem is that this is too cheesy, too gouda or edamer. Furthermore, somehow this song should be longer.

Petronella PoetryI have always enjoyed the entries from Ukraine. From “Sweet People” to the one in the silver dress with no brain. This song is powerful, but feels a bit overproduced. It does destroy the power in the singers voice to boost. But it is mystic indeed, just the way I love with Ukraine’s entries. Hope it continues for centuries.

RobertAnother female attempt of Ukraine, but unfortunately this time this effort is going to fail. Comparing with the song “Kukushka”, this song of Zlata is very and very boring. An ordinary ballad, which hasn’t impressed me at all. Also awful back vocalist made this uninteresting song even worse. Also must say that it’s forgettable and mediocre composition, which won’t finish good

Grandpa WatermanIt is good but in the middle of the song it just becomes confusing, everyone is singing different notes et cetera.
They need to sort it out!

Britni SpirsovicDis is Disney! I do not lajk! Too much drama, too much theatrical elements, enough with this. She has a good voice but this is not enough to make me like it. You are thrown left and right with this song. I do not understand where the song is going or if it is going anywhere at all. Zlata is gold in my language. I give her gold, gold of the worst.

MorenikIt’s funny that this is called Gravity because the quality of the contest just drops when you hear this song. It’s the musical equivalent of food poisoning, this song will only bring pain and discomfort to the people of Europe, if not extreme vomiting. Please throw this song out Mr. Sand, before our stomachs and ears attack!

Zlata’s English needs some improvement though, it’s almost incomprehensible! But I appreciate that Zlata doesn’t come across slutty like Ukrainian and Belorussian singers always do. Very, very classy!
