OGAE Rest of World has selected their entry for the The OGAE Second Chance Contest. It’s Gigi Radics’ “Ugy Faj”!
The OGAE Second Chance Contest is a video event organised by branches of OGAE, the international fan club of the Eurovision Song Contest. Each branch submits a song that did not win their country’s national selection. Each branch then votes Eurovision-style (12, 10, 8 points and so on).
For those of the readers familiar with the NCAA Basketball Tournament currently going on in the US, my friend Steve described OGAE Second Chance as sort of like the Eurovision equivalent of the NIT, but with more prestige.
Since 2009, OGAE Rest of the World has submitted an entry from a country that does not have its own OGAE branch. In 2009, we submitted Slovakia’s “Posledna Minuta” by Desmod & Lucia Novakova . In 2010, we submitted Bulgaria’s “Twist and Tango” by Miro. In 2011, OGAE Rest of the World won the Second Chance Contest with Iceland’s “Nott” by Yohanna. Last year, we submitted Latvia’s “She’s a Queen” by Roberts Petersons.
This fall, we agreed upon selecting a song from Hungary’s national selection. After discussion, we saw our favorite songs coming down to five:
Kally Saunders – “My baby”
Gergo Racz “Cxak allj mellem”
Gigi Radics “Ugy fay”
Szilvi Agardi and Denes Pal – “Sziveddel lass”
Ildiko Keresztes “Nem akarok többé játszani”
After much discussion, as well as consideration of what ESC UNITED readers wanted, we decided our best bet for a strong showing would be Gigi Radics. After all, over 50% of you voted for her to win.

So I had to add a bit more info about the NCAA Basketball tournament and NIT. In the NCAA Basketball tournament, 68 US college basketball teams are selected to compete. Winner of the tournament wins the National Championship (prestige blah blah blah).
There is then this tournament called the NIT (National Invitation Tournament) that then selects 32 teams to compete.
I remember when my alma mater, Ohio State, won the NIT a few years back, some people were happy. Most others were like, So what? We finished in 65th place!” (at the time there were 64 teams in the NCAA Basketball tournament).
So Steve’s comparison works to an extent, but I think Second Chance is a good bragging right for an OGAE club. And since Sweden has 13 of the 26 times this has taken place since 1987, OGAE Sweden has major bragging rights!
