Eyes will soon be focused on one specific Swiss city, but before we get that far, Portugal has already set their eyes for finding the next representative of the country. With the Portuguese broadcaster (RTP) confirming participation, they have at the same time revealed the rules and regulations for their upcoming national final.
Portugal in ESC 2025
Portugal will in 2025, make use of their national selection, which is Festival da Canção. The show will once again be used to decide who will represent Portugal on the big singing stage. Portugal has since 2017, focused on promoting the more national and traditional style of music on the big stage. This even granted them there first ever victory as well in 2017.
Therefor, the format for 2025 will remain largely the same, with a total of 20 songs participating. 10 songs will compete in each semi-final and then the grand final will decide the combined winner of the jury and the televote. Out of the 20 songs that will participate, 14 of them will be specially invited by RTP, while the remaining 6 songs will come from the open submissions.
Song submissions are already being accepted, and it will last until . In order to apply through the open submissions, appliers must fulfill a few set criteria.
Some of the criteria for applying include:
- Must be of Portuguese citizenship, if living abroad.
- Any nationality can apply, if they reside within Portugal.
- Demos must be submitted to the broadcaster, by filling a form on the submission website.

In 2024, iolanda will selected to represent Portugal at the contest in Malmö, Sweden. Here she performed her song “Grito“, which finished 10th place in the final, after both the juries and the televote had given their points. Thus continuing Portugal’s success and qualification streak for an impressive 4th year in a row.
