In 2024, Latvia finally achieved succes, when the country finally qualified for the grand final for the first time since 2016, when the contest was also last hosted by Sweden. Now, it’s time for Latvia to show it wasn’t just a fluke, and that despite the lower amount of submissions, there might be one gem, that can shine once again for Latvia, in Basel.
96 entries for 2025
Supernova, better known as Latvia’s national final, will once again return in 2025. For the upcoming year, Latvia is much earlier out, in order to have more time for proper preparation. Already now, the Latvian broadcaster (LTV) has not only just recently closed for their submission period, but also revealed that a total of 96 entries were received.
It might be fewer than what was submitted for 2024, but optimism remains very high, with the team behind even stating, that the main goal is to find someone talented and with an exciting composition, that can make Latvia proud once again.
LTV’s Head of the Entertainment and Documentary Content Editorial Department, Agnese KubliΕa went on to say:
- “Although the number of applications has not increased, the competition promises to be splendid and fierce. There is a wide spectrum of talent among the participants, representing various music genres – from already known names to brand new talents. The show promises to be a real musical adventure! In addition, this year there are more surprises than ever before, proving that the Eurovision Song Contest is a unique opportunity to appeal to a huge audience around the world!“
It is now up to a specially crafted jury, to select the songs that has the best chances of generating succes for Latvia in the competition, which will include not only locals, but also foreign professionals as well. Names and details of the jury composed by LTV will first be revealed after the Eurovision Song Contest has taken place in Basel, due to security and privacy reasons.
The list of participants for Supernova 2025 is expected to be revealed in November already. Whether the national final will feature more than just a final, is yet unknown. In 2024, the format featured 14 songs in total, with all of them participating in the semi-final, which was held one week prior to the final, which featured 10 songs of the 14 competing ones. At the moment, the only known detail, is that the 2025 final, will take place in February 2025.
As mentioned before, in 2024, Latvia could finally celebrate their first qualification to the final after 8 years, when Dons performance of his song “Hollow” brought them to an overall 16th place in the final.
