The first semi-final for Söngvakeppnin is now over, almost concluding the final Super Saturday (thanks Lithuania) of the Eurovision national final season. Five acts competed in the first semi-final of Iceland’s national selection and at the end of the night, only two qualified for the final. Per usual, all songs are sung in Icelandic in the semi-finals. Any songs that qualify for the final will then be sung in the intended language for Eurovision. The running order was as follows:
1. Blankiflúr – “Sjá þig”
2. CeaseTone – “Ró”
3. Væb – “Bíómynd”
4. Sunny – “Fiðrildi”
5. Anita – “Stingum af”
(Click on the songs listed to watch the live performances on YouTube.)
After some marvelous interval acts (including Sigga’s grand return!) and a final ad break, the qualifiers were announced. Qualifiers are determined entirely by televote in the semi-finals. The qualifiers were announced in random order. In order of being announced, the qualifiers were Væb and Anita. That means we must unfortunately say goodbye to Blankiflúr, CeaseTone, and Sunny. However, in years past, a wildcard has been awarded to the act with the most votes that didn’t qualify, so we could see the third place finisher from this semi move forward as the wildcard. Or that could come from next week’s semi-final. Who knows!
Next week on Saturday, 24 February, we’ll continue with semi-final two of Söngvakeppnin, where two more acts will move onto the final on Saturday, 2 March.
