The first semi-final for Söngvakeppnin is now over on the second Super Saturday of the season. Five acts competed in the first semi-final of Iceland’s national selection and at the end of the night, only three qualified for the final. Per usual, all songs are sung in Icelandic in the semi-finals. Any songs that qualify for the final will then be sung in the intended language for Eurovision.
The show opened with a performance by Aron Can and then the hosts took over. The show was hosted by Benedikt Valsson, Fannar Sveinsson, and Guðrún Dís Emilsdóttir, and featured some fun intro packages for the artists! The running order was as follows:
1. Stebbi JAK – “Frelsið mitt”
2. BIRGO – “Ég flýg í storminn”
3. Ágúst – “Eins og þú”
4. BIA – “Norðurljós”
5. VÆB – “RÓA”

After some interval acts and multiple ad breaks, the qualifiers were announced. Qualifiers are determined entirely by televote in the semi-finals. The qualifiers were announced in random order. In order of being announced, the qualifiers were VÆB, Stebbi JAK, and Ágúst. That means we must unfortunately say goodbye to BIRGO and BIA. In years past, the non-qualifier with the highest amount of televotes would advance as a wildcard, but that has been removed this year.
Next week on Saturday, 15 February, we’ll continue with semi-final two of Söngvakeppnin, where three more acts will move onto the final on Saturday, 22 February.
