It might have been a while since we last got an update on the German selection, but nonetheless, they are on their way as well. A new format was introduced for the 2025 season, which will include a total of 24 acts, and after tonight, we had the pleasure of seeing the first 12.

Chefsache ESC 2025: Wer singt für Deutschland? – Heat 1

If you need a reminder, then let’s start with that. The new German format will introduce 24 selected artists, who will be singing for the one spot, as the official German representative in Basel, Switzerland. The 24 acts were divided into 2 heats, which takes place prior to the semi-final. No official song is performed during the heats, only covers or older original songs. However, when we reach the semi-final, that is when we’ll hear the potential songs for the first time, and only 14 acts will reach this point.

That meant, despite not revealing any potential songs for the contest, the acts still had something to lose. In the first heat, 12 acts performed, and it was up to the jury to decide, which 7 impressed the most.

Below you’ll find the running order of tonight’s show, with the song titles that were covered:

  1. Julika – “Run” by Leona Lewis
  2. Benjamin Braatz – “Breakfast”
  3. Fannie – “Easy”
  4. Chase – “Million Years Ago” by Adele
  5. Enny-Mae x Paradigm – “Arcade” by Duncan Laurance
  6. Jonathan Henrich – “Golden Hour” by Jvke
  7. Feuerschwanz – “Dragostea din Tei” by O-Zone
  8. Cage – “Wrong Places” by H.E.R.
  9. Equa Tu – “Gaga”
  10. Janine – “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley
  11. Cosby – “Loved For Who I Am”
  12. Abor & Tynna – “Skyfall” by Adele

Some further details about this national final format, is that it’s aired on the private German channel RTL, which is where the creator of the show, Stefan Raab, is currently working. However, the final will be aired on the main channel, Das Erste.

Heat 1: Results

Now then, as mentioned before, the results of the heats are purely decided by the jury. The jury for the first heat consisted of Stefan Raab, Yvonne Catterfeld, Elton and the 2004 German ESC entrant Max Mutzke.

Together, the 4 decided to pick the following acts to advance to the semi-final, which will take place on the 22nd of February:

  • Julika
  • Benjamin Braatz
  • Cage
  • Feuerschwanz
  • Abor & Tynna
  • Cosby
  • Jonathan Henrich

The second heat of the German national final, will already take place on the following day of the 15th of February. Here another 7 acts will advance to the semi-final as well.
