Australia’s national broadcaster, SBS, has confirmed the antipodean nation’s participation in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest.
The announcement came live at SBS’s 2025 Upfronts event, held at the Sydney Town Hall today. Upfronts are an annual event where television networks announce their scheduled programming for the upcoming year, wherein the broadcaster confirmed their intention to televise the contest once again.
After a synopsis of the history of Eurovision, the announcement shared by SBS, as reported by TV Tonight, ended as follows:
“Australia has participated in the contest since 2015, creating a legacy of sending truly unique artists to share their talents on the biggest platform in the world. Who will represent Australia in Basel, Switzerland 2025?“
It should be noted that when Eurovision – Australia Decides, the Australian national final, was held in the past, it was also announced at the SBS Upfronts. However, it was glaringly absent from today’s proceedings, prompting speculation that Australia will once again use internal selection to choose their representative. Australia Decides last ran in 2022, but its impact remains strong, as the internally-selected Voyager (ESC 2023) and Electric Fields (ESC 2024) came second in the 2022 and 2019 national finals respectively.
2025 will mark 10 years since Australia first competed in Eurovision, placing 5th with Guy Sebastian’s “Tonight Again” in 2015. Australia was invited as a special guest participant to Eurovision that year in Vienna, Austria, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the contest, and to acknowledge more than 30 years of dedicated early morning viewing across the country. In 2016, they signed a contract permitting participation until 2023, and have continued their participation ever since.
In 2024, Electric Fields placed 11th in the first semi-final with “One Milkali (One Blood)”, failing to make the grand final, but making history as the first Eurovision act to include an Australian First Nations language and a yidaki (didgeridoo) in their performance.
