Sweden hosted the 2024 contest earlier this year in Malmö, but the spirit remains high as the national broadcaster (SVT) are ready for another year. Rules and details have been published and the submission period will begin starting already tomorrow. With that, let’s have a quick look into what’s new.
Sweden in 2025
Melodifestivalen will with no surprise, act as the method for how Sweden will select their upcoming representative for the 2025 contest. Compared with the 2024 edition, much will remain the same. The national final will begin in February and end in March, with a total of 6 shows being broadcasted. From these 6 shows, there will be 5 semi-finals and one final, which will consist of 12 songs.
What’s new is, that acts who fail to qualify directly to the final, will be decided differently. As mentioned before, the final will consist of 12 songs. The top 2 from each of the 5 semi-finals will advance to the final, making up 10 of the 12 songs in total. However, unlike past years, for 2025, only the songs that rank 3rd will be given another chance to reach the final. Meanwhile songs that finish 4th in the semi-finals, are now eliminated completely.
This means, after the end of the last semi-final, there will be 5 songs competing for 2 spots. 1 spot will be awarded to the highest scoring 3rd place song, while the remaining 4 will compete in a final vote, in order for the final to reach 12 songs. The change come as no surprise, after the backlash of the method that was used in 2024.
In 2024, all of the 3rd and 4th place songs from across the semi-finals, competed for the last two spots, which resulted with songs that was performed the same day, as the decision was made, qualifying to the final. The criticize of the idea came from, that those were the songs that were fresh from memory of viewers, rendering it very unfair for the songs that weren’t performed in the last semi-final.
Songs will be available ASAP
Another change compared to last year, is that songs that compete in the national final, will now be made available online on the day before their semi-finals. In 2024, viewers had to wait long before they could replay some of the songs that enjoyed on the live broadcast. That won’t be the case now for 2025, as the songs will be available the day before they compete.
In total, 30 songs will take part in Melodifestivalen 2025 and there will be 6 songs in each semi-final. The submission period will open on the 23rd of August 2024 and will then close on the 14th of September 2024. Further details and rules about participation in Melodifestivalen 2025 can be found here.
In 2024, Marcus & Martinus had the honor of representing Sweden on home soil, despite them being Norwegian. The opened the grand final with their song “Unforgettable“, and made sure to start the party early. In the end, their performance granted them a 9th place, with a combined score of 174 points from both the juries and the televote.
