After closing the submission window last Tuesday, the Spanish broadcaster RTVE has announced that 825 songs were submitted for next year’s Benidorm Fest. According to the broadcaster, the songs run the full gambit of genres, artists, and tempos.
Record Year
The number of submissions, reflecting an increasing interest in the contest since the return of Benidorm Fest, has reached an apex this year, featuring 825 songs as compared to last year’s 455. Of those songs received, almost 200 were received within the last 24 hours of the submission window.
All the songs submitted reflect a complete musician-song combo, meaning no song is in need of a singer and no singer is in need of a song. RTVE has made a concerted effort to prioritize and promote the submission of complete musical works (having both a musician and a song).
More Talent, Variety, and Diversity
RTVE also announced that they received the largest selection of music styles ever received including reggaeton, trap, EDM, and other genres that have not featured as heavily in years prior. There has also been an increase in songs that are performed in co-official languages like Basque, Galician, and Catalan.
The Spanish national broadcaster has also unveiled that songs from both well-known established acts and aspiring singers have been submitted. This diversity, RTVE argues, will help in the search for the most competitive and well-performing songs for Spain’s official entry.
